Britney Spears at Los Angeles Lakers Game

Britney Spears, friend and wig made it out to the Los Angeles Lakers NBA basketball game on Friday night against the Houston Rockets.  Bald Brit looked pretty much like her old self. Maybe rehab finally actually worked for a celeb. I say be proud of your baldness and go without the wigs while it grows out.

The Rockets won the game in overtime despite Kobe Bryant’s 53 points.  A costly foul and turnover by Bryant on the last play gave the victory to Houston.

Kobe Scores 50 for 4th Straight Game

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant scored 50 points for the fourth consecutive game on Friday night against the New Orleans Hornets. Bryant is only the second player in NBA history to accomplish the task. The other player to do it being the immortal Wilt ‘The Stilt’ Chamberlain. Wilt holds the record with seven straight 50 pointers.

On a side note the Lakers won the game 111-105 over the Hornets. It was the first time this year that L.A. has beaten N.O. The Lakers have won all four games during Bryant’s streak and now have a record of 37-32.

Kobe’s Points By Opponent During The Streak

  • March 23, 2007, New Orleans Hornets (31-38), 50 points
  • March 22, 2007, Memphis Grizzlies (17-52), 60 points
  • March 18, 2007, Minnesota Timberwolves (29-38), 50 points
  • March 16, 2007, Portland Trailblazers (29-40), 65 points

The combined record of these four teams is 106-168 (0.387%) but who is looking at that. Kobe will have a chance to make it five in a row on Sunday night against the Golden State Warriors.

Marvin Gaye’s National Anthem

Their has been a handful of breathtaking performances of the Star Spangled Banner.  Some of the better versions were Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock in 1969 and Whitney Houston at the Super Bowl in the early 90’s. By far the best version on record, in my opinion, is the late Marvin Gaye’s version from the 1983 NBA All-Star Game.

Todd Mintz was at the game and has discussed the power and emotion that Marvin Gaye put into this legendary performance.

Then he started to sing… and he sang very slowly, drawing out every syllable of every word.  Marvin took a full minute to sing the first line of the Anthem.

As Marvin was delivering that very first line, I felt like I was struck by lightning.  I knew with certainty that I was witnessing something very special”a watershed cultural event that would be talked about many decades into the future.

Between the second and third lines of the Anthem, our entire section arose en masse and began clapping to the beat which we continued to do for the rest of the song.  For what seemed like hours, we weren’t in the Fabulous Forum…we were in the pews of Marvin’s church…a church none of us white suburbanites would likely ever visit in person.  Through the most unlikely of musical vehicles, Marvin gave us the essence of Soul, personal and collective.

Did others see what I saw and feel what I felt?  I knew others dug the Anthem and were groovin’ to it.  But did they participate in the groove or just passively partake?  Were they tripping like me?  Did they trip at all?  I didn’t know, couldn’t know.

Marvin Gaye died tragically from a gunshot from his father almost a year after his performance at the NBA All-Star game. No one else in music has done or will ever do what Marvin did over the course of his three decades in show business.

Kobe Bryant Suspended for Flying Elbow (again!)

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has been suspended by the NBA office for a flailing elbow on his follow through that caught Minnesota Timberwolves guard Marko Jaric in the nose.  Check out the video here.  It is the second time Bryant has been suspended for hitting a player in the face this year.  Earlier this year he was suspended for doing the same thing to Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs.

Last season Bryant was suspended for two games for clotheslining Mike Miller of the Memphis Grizzlies.  At least he didn’t grab Jaric by the neck and bend him over a hotel chair. Be sure to check out Kobe and the 666 Connection.
