iTrip Pocket FM Transmitter for the iPod Nano Review

It’s not often that we get excited about an FM transmitter. As a matter of fact, the iTrip Pocket is the first FM transmitter we have ever gotten excited about. In general, FM transmitters aren’t the most exciting devices. They’re just useful devices which serve the purpose of getting music off of your digital audio player and on to any system with an FM radio. I’ve owned a few FM transmitters in the past and well, they’ve all sucked. As a matter of fact i’d kind of given up on them until now. However, I’d never tried any of Griffins iTrips though I had heard good things about them.

When I spotted the new iTrip Pocket and noticed how small it was and how it looked to be a perfect compliment to the iPod Nano, I just had to try it. It turns out that it’s quality and build are so similar to the Nano itself that one could be fooled in to thinking that it was an accessory that Apple produced themselves. Also, it unquestionably must be be one of the smallest FM transmitters available.

Setting up the iTrip Pocked was a cinch. I connected it to the bottom of my Nano via it’s dock connector. The Nano picked it up right away and flashed on one of the preset FM bands that the iTrip comes set up with. The iTrip pocket draws power to run directly from the Nano, which I prefer much better to having to worry about batteries or charging the transmitter. As it is with gadgets nowadays we are constantly having to keep on top of charging devices, who wants to worry about charging the accessories to those gadgets as well!

On the iTrip Pocket are three buttons, labeled as 1, 2 and 3, each one functions as a preset for an FM band. Above those three buttons is a directional button which allows you to navigate through stations. First I tried the presets, but all of them had to much interference from nearby radio stations so I used the directional button to navigate to a station with the least interference as possible. After that, music came through very well, much better then the experience I’ve had with any previous FM transmitter. I don’t claim to be an expert FM transmitters, but from the few I’ve tested, the iTrip Pocket came out on top. Though I am sure that there are perhaps more expensive FM transmitters which can offer even better quality, but they will undoubtedly cost more and not be as conveniently designed as the iTrip Pocket is if you own a 2G Nano. However I did notice that if I place the iTrip Pocket in the back seat of my car, the signal started to become staticy and erratic. In general, The closer to the FM radio, the better the music coming out of the radio sounds.

Overall, the iTrip Pocket has been a pleasure to use. The fact that it is so light tiny and it matches perfectly with my Nano is really great, and it makes me feel less annoyed about having to carry along an extra bulky accessory. A clear hard plastic Dock Connector cover is included as well so that you can toss it into a bag without worrying about it scratching up anything. Using the iTrip Pocket with both with my Car radio and home stereo system worked superbly. The iTrip Pocket is reasonably priced at $49.99, so If you have a 2nd generation Nano and you need an FM transmitter, look no further. Also, we spotted it for $39.99 at MWave, making the iTrip Pocket even more enticing to purchase.

Portable Flash Player Transforms USB Keys in to Music Systems

Kinyo’s DS-350 Portable USB Flash Player is a basically a no-frills portable speaker system designed primarily just to play music off of USB keys. There are many other big speaker systems with USB ports, but this is the first small system we’ve spotted with one. The system supports MP3 and WMA files, and it has 6 different equalizer modes. Aside from USB keys it will also play music off of ipods, Mp3 players, CD Players and most other systems that have audio.

Burton’s Lil Buddy Bag Sports an iPod Speaker System and Bottle Opener

Somewhat odd, yet pretty practical, Burton’s Lil Buddy bag sports a built-in ipod speaker system and a zipper pull that doubles as a bottle opener. The bag is designed to carry a 12 pack, thus that bottle opener should come in handy. We’re not so crazy about the Mojave plaid version but thankfully there is also the less loud True Black and Dragon Jacquard versions to choose from. Burton’s Lil Buddy bag retails for $54.99.

Audiovox’s $29.99 Bargain MP3 Player with an OLED Display

Here is an MP3 player that offers a decent amount of features and memory, despite being such a cheapy. $29.99 gets you 1GB, an FM radio with 20 presets, a bright OLED display, an equalizer, and WMA support. Of course there has to be a catch right? The battery life for the Audiovox MP6610f is dismal at just a reported few hours. Still at this price, this thing is almost disposable. And there is also a 512mb version which is available for $19.99.

TEAC MC-DX220i Slim CD System and iPod Dock

The TEAC MC-DX220i Slim CD System is a pretty decent looking CD system with a vertical CD load system, a decent set of speakers with an output of over 20 watts all in a compact and slim size. Overall, though the system looks pretty ordinary, kind of like something you would see on a shelf in the electronics section over at K-Mart. But what caught our attention about the TEAC MC-DX220i is the fact that it also has a built-in iPod docking station for charging your ipod and playing music off of it. And it comes with a remote control that can access basic ipod functions. That and the FM tuner make the TEAC MC-DX220i pretty enticing. The TEAC MC-DX220i retails for $219.

The MuStik Car MP3 A200 has a feature that we wish came on many more MP3 Players – a built-in FM Transmitter. It’s also got a neat 1.8″ OLED display, it supports video playback, and it will also play WMA files. Unfortunately the biggest capacity that it is available in is 1GB and it isn’t the most attractive looking. Still, other companies should pay heed to that whole built-in FM transmitter gimmick that the A200 has got going for it.

Sony’s latest MP3 Walkman player is making us all ga-ga. It’s the size of a USB key and it has a direct USB connection, a 3 line color screen, an FM tuner and it’s available in either 1GB or 2gB. Oh, and then it’s got this very sweet 30 hour battery life which stems from just one hour of charging. On top of that, it comes with a clip to attach to your clothes just like Apple’s lovely shuffle which is suddenly not looking as dapper as it did yesterday. Advanced MP3 Players is selling the Sony NW-E010 for £76.99, which is steep for a 2GB player. But this spiffy DAP should be available soon state-side with a better price tag.

The wall mountable iSymphony V1Blue is a relatively slim little system that manages to pack in a lot of punch feature-wise. It comes with a standard CD player, AM/FM radio, a clock radio, a wireless ipod dock, it can accept USB connections and it even has an SD, MMC and Memory Stick card slots for playing MP3 or WMA files. Aside from being a trusty little music player, it turns out that your ipod has a lot of productivity potential waiting to be tapped. The iGadget application essentially turns your ipod in to an “iGadget” that lets you load driving directions, your outlook email appointments, contacts, tasks and notes, weather forecasts, movie showtimes, RSS News feeds, Daily Horoscopes, as well as text libraries and music listings all on your iPod. It also comes with software that allows you to back up folders from your pc on to your ipod. The week wouldn’t be complete with out a cool new ipod dock. Our latest fab ipod dock is the Audio Pro Porto that is available in either black or bright red. We dig that the Porto’s vertical rectangular design is a deviation of design style from the run of the mill ordinary ipod docks. It’s also designed to be portable, so it comes with a handle long-life chargeable battery. And aside from promising great sound quality for a little guy, the Porto also has an FM tuner. The Pro Porto ipod dock should be available soon but no word on pricing just yet.

Samsung DVD-L25 Portable DVD Player Plays Mini-DVDs, But Why?

When we spotted the Ben’s Bargains post that said that that the Samsung DVD-L25 Portable DVD Player was available at B & H photo for $24.99, we thought that wow that must be a steal. Then we took a look at its specs. Ok, so it has a 2.5 inch display, we’re used to an ipod with video and it can totally deal with that for $25 bucks, and its compatibility with MP3, WMA and JPEG files sounded good too. Or so we thought… it turns out that the DVD-L25 only plays Mini-DVD and Mini-CD discs. Which basically means that the only content you’ll be able to play on this thing is content you record on to mini-discs using your PC. Which begs the question, why did they even bother manufacturing this device? We suppose that this was Samsung’s way of making it as small as possible for a DVD player. But can you imagine the poor technologically ignorant fool who buys one of these and then comes home and realizes that he / she can’t play any of her standard DVDs on it? You just know it’s bound to happen.
