Easter fun with RSPB Wildlife Explorers

If Easter spells disaster for your children’s teeth why not forego the usual chocolate eggs and get your kids something they’re going to enjoy, and which won’t result in a trip to the dentist.

For only £14 your child can become a RSPB ‘Wildlife Explorer’ . Their membership will get them lots of cool wildlife goodies, including stickers, posters, a magazine, and best of all free entry to over 100 RSPB nature reserves.

There are lots of wildlife related games for your young explorer to play online and even a whole area dedicated to ‘out of classroom learning’, run in conjunction with the national school curriculum, so you know your money has been well spent.

Kids can learn all about birds and their habitats and are encouraged to get outdoors and explore their environment, so if they do overindulge on chocolate they can burn of the excess calories running about looking for their feathered friends!

Ethical families fork out £700 more per year on baby, finds survey

New research commissioned by Family Investments looking at the buying habits of parents have found ethically aware families spend £700 more on their kids per year. The products they looked at included environmentally friendly goods and those made by workers guaranteed a fair trade compared to ordinary brands and found if you have a conscience, you’ll pay more.

Prices may seem little when you compare the cost of an ordinary brand nappy at 19p and eco nappies at 41p or organic baby food at 79p compared to other brands at 63p but those pennies certainly add up. Obviously I’d be great if prices equalised but until then, are you happy to pay that bit more? [Read the full article at BBC]

Modern Nursery Nest highchair becomes a regular chair

There’s nothing like a baby highchair to take the style out of your hipster pad (assuming the baby hasn’t flung nappy-contents all over whatever style you had left after sixty hours’ labour). Modern Nursery solves this with the Nest High Chair which starts out as a slick (but still eminently functional) baby chair, and repurposes, with removal of only a few screws, into a booster seat suitable for 2-4 year olds, and then a regular small chair to take your sprog up to age 6. Angelina Jolie has one, so you’ll not be surprised they cost $570 USD. [GT]

Review: My Daddy is a Pretzel

Kids are super-bendy so yoga should be right up their street. It isn’t the most accessible of activities, though… right?

My Daddy is a Pretzel is a light-hearted look at yoga from Barefoot Books, which may be just the way to introduce yoga to the smaller members of your family.

You can also buy a bendable ‘Mr Pretzel’ figure (who, let’s face it, will be better at demonstrating the positions than most of us) and a box of Yoga Pretzels – 50 cards with quick activities, games and positions.

The book links familiar concepts to yoga postions, using fabulous illustrations to show exactly how to do each one. It is a colourful, charming book that introduces yoga to children (and bah humbug adults) beautifully.

The Yoga Pretzels box takes the idea further, with loads of ideas like Elephant Breath and ‘Yogi Says’. I particularly like ‘Special Place’, which my six year old can use when she is feeling anxious.

My Daddy is a Pretzel (hardback) is £10.99, Mr Pretzel is currently £3.99 on special offer, while the box of Yoga Pretzels will set you back £9.99.
