Jump Kids boys’ and girls’ eco-fashion

This is really nice to see. Jump Kids is funky kiddie-clothes, handcrafted and, amazingly, partially made of recycled plastic bottles. In fact, it takes 24 recycled plastic bottles to make one fleece jumper. Two Scottish women are behind this exciting venture, which started on their kitchen tables, but they have now launched their online store. It’s a nicely quirky range boys’ and girls’ eco-fashion which abides by fair-trade standards and is inspired by Scottish heritage.

Woodland friends by Organic Hejhog

I’m sure I’m not the only parent who refuses to buy their child plastic, battery operated toys. Not only are they a disaster for the environment, in my opinion they also make children lazy, by entertaining them, rather than stimulating their imagination. These little wooden animals by Organic Hejhog are brilliant, as they are made from sustainable hardwood and they are decorated with non-toxic paints. You can choose from a variety of woodland animals such as badgers, hares, red fox and squirrel

Transport the kids in a Kangaroo Bike

I’m a cyclist, and I have a young daughter, but I’ve never been comfortable with the idea of her riding in a trailer behind the bike. I think they are too low, and vulnerable, and I’d hate not being able to see her, so we use a bike seat, but I would swap that in a second for one of these beauties by Kangaroo Bike. This is essentially a trike with front mounted ‘cabin’. The bike frame is made of aluminium, so it’s both light and strong. It has a 3-point steering system and independent suspension on the front, so the handling is great. It has hydraulic brakes…

Billboard ‘Baby Bags’ by WAS

It took me ages to accept I actually needed a special bag to keep all the random bits and pieces you carry once you’ve had a baby, and when I did give in, it took even longer to find one that wasn’t pink or frilly. If only I’d known about WAS bags. The Kiwi company save old billboards from a grim landfill death, and turn them into funky bags, including a range especially for bambinos…

Seventh Heaven nursery collection

Seventh Heaven is only a few months old but already has a thriving trade in fairtrade gifts. I’m particularly enamoured with the kids nursery collection. The items are far more interesting than your standard…

Close organic baby carrier

We’ve featured several baby slings here on Hippyshopper but that’s because, in my opinion, it’s the easiest and safest way to carry your baby. Not only do you get to maintain that close bond, but your little one is kept safe and cosy, and there is no stress put upon it’s delicate…

Parents Like Us festival for children and parents

If you have children there’s only one place to be on the 11th to 13th May, and that’s the Parents Like Us festival in Edinburgh. In it’s third year the festival has gone from strength to strength. Not only will your tots get to hob knob with some big names from the world of CBBC, they’ll be able to take part in many activities such as baby massage, sign and sing, baby shiatsu and yoga. There’s also the chance to learn more about real nappies, organic food for kids and recycling. Tickets are £3 for each event (this admits two kids, adults go free if they are accompanied by a child under 5).

Organix soft rusks for babies

I remember eating my cousin’s rusks when she was a baby (and I was about 13!). I also remember how incredibly sweet and sickly they were, one of the top ingredients being sugar. Thankfully things have come a long way in the world of baby foods since then, and one of the leading brands on the market today is Organix. They’ve just brought out their own organic soft rusk biscuits, ideal for weaned babies who are ready to take the next step to finger foods. Like all their other great products the rusks are sweetened with grape juice and carry the ‘no junk promise’. £1.85 for a box of 12 biscuits.

Fresh Daisy organic baby foods

Fresh Daisy foods aim to help you give your child a healthy, organic and fresh diet right from the word ‘wean.’ With single ingredient baby purees that include tender carrot, smooth sweet pototo, orchard apple and rustic pear, your baby will get some yummy first tastes of grown up fare.

Even their smoothies and ice cream combine fruit and veg. Despite sounding gross, the pear and parsnip flavour was voted the UK’s best organic ice-cream at The Soil Association awards with thumbs up from top foodies and judges Sophie Grigson and Giles Coren.

Doggie tee from People Tree

I know, you think this is just another excuse to show a cute hippy kid wearing ethical clothes? And you’d be right, but having just discovering this brilliant long sleeve tee for my daughter, I felt it was my duty to share it with the rest of you.

It’s from Hippyshopper favourites People Tree and is made from 100% fairtrade certified organic cotton. It features a cheeky little pooch saying “hello, it’s me again”. Available in turquoise long sleeve for £14, or rosewood short sleeve for £12 they are made in India and designed by genius illustrator Chris Haughton.
