Fortunately, I’m the type of person who gets sick only probably once a year – but when it does strike – I feel like the most useless person on earth!

A lot of us do hate getting sick – so we need to fight the illness before it even starts.

Here are some tips on how we can fight the dreaded flu, as compiled by Australian Women’s Health:

Two words: Chamomile tea!

Chamomile can help soothe your ruffled nerves, make you feel calm and relaxed – while at the same time staving off the common cold.

Bring out the oats.

That breakfast oatmeal has more health benefits than you think. Oats contain beta-glucans, which are a component of fiber. And there’s no better source of fiber in the world than oats.

Sip that tomato soup.

If chicken soup is the cure for whatever’s ailing you, substitute the chicken with tomato to help prevent illness in the first place. The lycopene in tomatoes are a great antioxidant which helps boost your immune system.

Down a bottle of sports drink.

Can you imagine any of those towering basketball players getting sick? The reason why they have such a strong immune system is in what they’re drinking. Gatorade helps boost your immune system when downed during an intense workout.

Whether you only take the occasional vitamin pill or if you have a slew of medications to take due to a chronic illness, here’s something that should interest you.

The battle between the drug industry and its critics over exactly how much companies must do to prove medicines are safe played out in microcosm at a two-day Food and Drug Administration meeting this week.

A panel of FDA experts voted 14-2 on Wednesday that diabetes drugs should face far more scrutiny to be sure they don’t cause heart attacks. The doctors present agreed the drugs should be tested for several years in 2,000 diabetics without heart disease before being approved. After hitting the market, many medicines would need to pass through even bigger studies that follow tens of thousands of people for many years.

Researchers are questioning why medications for diabetes, which prevent blindness, nerve damage and kidney disease -are not working to benefit the heart even though it should, at least theoretically.

The issue about diabetes drugs causing the increase in the risks of heart attacks has been ongoing for these past few months. As a result, drugs for lowering the cholesterol level, cures for mental illness and medication for anemia are all being placed under scrutiny.

It’s a good thing that such a discussion took place. According to Thomas Fleming, a statistician from the University of Washington, the additional studies can catch or completely exonerate medications which have ill-effects to the heart, even before they are approved by the FDA.

And again, he’s NOT dead. Yet.

Jordan has spoken out about the shock illness that has caused her husband Peter Andre to spend a further night in hospital.

The former glamour model was speaking to OK! magazine.

"He’s really poorly. I feel really bad because if I was in hospital I would want someone with me all the time. But I physically can’t do it because of the kids and work" she explained.

Peter Andre has contracted meningitis.

At one point rumours even emerged that he had died, before the singer himself issued a statement assuring his three fans that he was alive and well.

Jordan thinks he must have caught the disease before flying back from the US: “The whole plane journey he was sick. We kept calling the doctor when we got home because we were so worried, then we took him to hospital."

I love how Brits never say "the hospital", they just say "to hospital". I’m going to start doing that, dropping all my prepositions. Maybe it will make me sound smarter.

Production on Johnny Depp’s new movie has been put on hold while his daughter Lily-Rose recovers from an illness in a British hospital. Depp was scheduled to begin filming Sweeney Todd with director Tim Burton, but staff on the project have been told they will not work until Depp is ready to return. “He does not want to come back until Lily-Rose gets the all-clear,” says a source. “The plan is to re-employ everybody when she is better.” Detailed information about Lily-Rose’s illness has not been released.

Johnny Depp’s seven-year-old daughter Lily-Rose was rushed to a UK hospital nine days ago with a serious illness, according to a British paper. The Pirates of the Caribbean star and partner Vanessa Paradis have reportedly not left their daughter’s side. “The staff immediately recognized him when he walked through the door,” said an anonymous source at the hospital. “He has not asked for any special favors but just wants the best for his child, like any parent… It is such a difficult time for him but he is hanging in there for the sake of his daughter and the whole family is just praying that she gets better. They are taking each day as it comes.” Details of Lily-Rose’s condition have not been confirmed, but one report suggests she may have blood poisoning after being pinned with a rusty tack. Depp’s reps have told the press that she is “doing much better.” Let’s hope so.

I’m sick. It’s the nauseating, queasy flu-like feelings again. As I sit here thinking about collapsing on the cold tile floors with the baby crawling around me bewildered, I remember the good old days when I used to pretend to be sick. Here’s a short chronology (and useful tips) of faking sickness.

Fifth Grade: I have taken a washcloth and dipped it in boiling water then placed it on my head. For some reason this worked. Parents would touch forehead and say “lay in bed”. I then would spend the day in my room reading Archie comics.

Junior High School: I used to pretend to oversleep by playing, “Dead Girl On Floor”. I would place the covers halfway down the bed to cover my head. This worked. Mom used to come into my room and think I left for school early. Unfortunately, the time I tried this I realized this was a stupid idea as I had to lay still and quiet like that in my room until 3pm.

High School: This was easy. I would meet up with friends in front of school and then when the bell rang we would take the downtown subway to the Village where we would spend the day hanging out at Patricia Fields, Postermat, Washington Square Park and sitting around pizza parlors.

Work: When I just didn’t feel like being at work I would make the Fake Cough Call. Always leave a message before the office opens and make it seem as if you’re doing them a favor by not showing up. “Hi, (cough cough) I don’t feel too good…(cough) I think I may be coming down with some malaria-like illness so don’t want to infect the others (do heavy coughing at this point)”.

I hope this gives you ideas and some of you will use these methods. Now before I sign off, what the HELL IS GOING ON WITH BRITNEY SPEARS?! IS SHE FAKING SICKNESS? I think she’s having a nervous breakdown. I mean, it’s big news if her KOJAK look makes national news.
