Tesco bnatural beauty range

Just as supermarkets have responded to the growing demand for organic food, they are also branching out into the natural cosmetic market, with Tesco introducing their ‘bnatural’ beauty range this month.

It’s an inexpensive range of skin, hair and bodycare products which are free from artificial colours or synthetic fragrances, and which contain active botanicals and some organic ingredients. It includes products such as ‘Skin brightening cleanser’ which boasts ingredients like pumpkin enzymes and Inca inchi oil at £3.69 for 150ml and ‘Sleep time pillow spray’ with valerian, hops and lavender at £3.29 for 50ml.

Despite the fact Tesco’s are aiming these products towards their organic buying customers, they themselves admit they have a long way to go to make the new line 100% organic and ethical. Senior Technologist Marion Morley has admitted that only two of the 40 products are organic, and they are struggling to source further organic ingredients. “The decision made corporately is to be organic where we can” said Morley.

Cardiospermum gel for eczema

Every summer I get scaly patches on the backs of my hands. It starts with the first major heatwave, and finally disappears around Bonfire Night. I refuse to use steroid creams to treat it, instead making do with not itching it and using a lot of E45.

But having read this piece in The Times, I’m going to give balloon vine a whirl this summer. Also known as cardiospermum gel, balloon vine gel is a traditional Pakistani method of treating dry and irritated skins. While the evidence of its success is more anecdotal than scientific, I’m happier with word of mouth non-steroid creams than I am slathering myself in ineffective hydrocortisones for the rest of my life.

Ishi luxury organic and fairtrade skincare

I had a good look through Ishi’s product line when they exhibited at last year’s Professional Beauty show. In their three product lines they use organically grown grapes and fairtrade Crillo cocoa powder to create beauty products that look, smell and feel divine.

The three lines available are ChocoTherapy with products incorporating chocolate, VinoTherapy with grapes and TruffleTherapy packed with, you guessed it, truffles! They currently have a sale on with most prices knocked down.

Stella McCartney’s new organic skincare range Care

It’s a good thing for the organic beauty industry when the big fashion names decide they want a piece of the action. Of course, it is only natural that Stella McCartney should be making waves with her new range Care, after all she’s already launched a GMO and animal testing free perfume range ‘Pampering’ and is a big campaigner for all things animal friendly.

So this range is bound to get a few tongues wagging. The EcoCert certified products are all organic and derived from nautral sources. Stella says, “We are at the start of a new century now and not just living on the leftovers of a tree-hugging society. I think that people expect luxury from their organic products, and yet those are two words that are never linked together. I know that most of what I put on my skin is also being absorbed by my body. I eat organic food and I live a fairly healthy lifestyle, so I demand that of my skincare.

“I believe that it’s possible to have luxurious skincare that doesn’t compromise one’s personal beliefs or the safety of the environment. I also feel it is important to have people like myself that commit to an organic skincare line and lead the larger beauty producers to go into this area.”

The range includes cleanser, floral toning water, moisturisers and a ‘discovery set’ with four sample sized products.

Care will be released on April 22nd. Our US readers can get the products online at Sephora with prices from $34.
