The government announced a bold plan yesterday to have labels on products to show the environmental impact of producing, transporting and disposing the product. The government is working with the Carbon Trust and British Standards Institute (BSI) to develop the system over the next 18 months. Although the scheme will be voluntary, there are already a number of companies working with the project, for example Marks and Spencer and Tesco. A further 120 companies have expressed an interest in the scheme. The Carbon Trust is running a pilot project at the moment with Boots, Innocent Smoothies and Walkers crisps.

Golden eagle chick hatches in Donegal
If you’re a bird nerd like me you will be excited to know that a golden eagle chick has hatched in Donegal. It’s the first time a chick has been born since eagles were made extinct in the area nearly 100 years ago. The chick is now five weeks old, and was born in the Glenveagh National Park. The adult birds were first re-introduced to the park back in 2001 as part of a project managed by the Golden Eagle Trust Ltd and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Stansted airport expansion threat to planet
There is a really interesting article in The Independent today about the effects of global warming on the Inuit community. A prominent leader of the Inuit community is due to speak at the public inquiry opening today into he proposed expansion of Stansted Airport. The groups fighting against the expansion are using global warming as their main argument against the expansion. Aqqaluk Lynge is an Inuit politician and head of the Inuit community in Greenland. He will speak out against the ‘cheap flights’ culture that is fuelling global warming. He will give details of the very real effects of global warming on his people.

Have a rant about the rubbish
I’m on the subject of fortnightly rubbish collections again. I am concerned that rats are going to be crawling out of every crook and crevice and nibbling on the pieces of rubbish that have been left decaying for two weeks. Rubbish collected every two weeks, means only 26 collections per year. Meanwhile noxious gases will be consuming the streets and the government will wonder why more people are developing asthma and launch a perfunctory study into the issue.
