Eavesdropping on a conversation between young women at Starbucks can yield some interesting tidbits on our culture. You can get sex tips, learn about antidepressants and try and decode men. One thing that you most likely won’t hear about is money. Even between the best of friends; salary, credit card debt, and account balances are taboo topics.
Why?
Growing up, whenever I’d ask my grandparents about money they’d say that talking about money is rude, and that is a social concept validated everywhere. Even women’s magazines often don’t touch the subject.

“False friends are worse than open enemies.”
-Scottish Proverb
There’s even a Sex and the City episode entitled “Frenemies”

God! I’ve never been so clueless in life! Where am I? What am I doing here? I’m just so lost. I guess this is what happens to all kids who choose to come to Universities. The first few weeks are fun, but in a scary way! At the risk of bragging, I have actually been INVITED to come along on more than one “Boys Night Out” with my boyfriend and his buddies – and he wasn’t always the one inviting me. I have been asked for relationship advice by my boyfriend’s brothers. I was even allowed to come along on a recent all-guys trip (although I would never actually suggest that). To say the least, when my man and I had a temporary parting of ways, his boys were happy when we got past the nonsense.

When I was 23 I would never have dreamt that I would go on a cruise to the Caribbean and find Mr. Right. Only Mr. Right was in the wrong spot. I was living in southern California, pretty much right on the beach and working in the movie industry. He was running an insurance agency right outside of Washington DC, three hours away from any beach and full of conservative, stuck up people. I thought for sure it would never work. Well four and half years later he popped the question with a beautiful ring. It was now the dilemma of who was going where and since he was running a family business I agreed to come to the DC area but only for a couple of years because DC life wasn’t for me. It’s now been a year and half since I’ve been here, I can’t say that I love it but I am dealing with it and I have learned that sometimes in life you have to just deal with things for them to get better. Or as the Rolling Stones say, “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you might find that you get what you need.”

I definitely understand how the ensemble cast of Friends turned from a group of nobody’s to a cast of somebody’s who can now command hundreds of thousands of dollars per episode in any TV show that they do. And millions of dollars for each movie. Continue reading ‘Why the Hell does “The Hills” Cast Make so Much Money?’
