I don’t know about you, but I haven’t sorted my make up bag out in years, so I decided to do it this weekend. I was so shocked at how nasty some of the old eyeshadows were, I revamped my entire make up bag. Is it about time you did the same? Old make up can be really bad for your skin, and no one wants to carry more then they need, so here’s my list of the top ten things you need in your make up bag…

1. A foundation brush

I must admit, I’ve always applied my foundation with my fingers. I don’t wear it often, so when I do, I just grap a fingerful and rub it in! And I thought it looked fine… until I tried using a brush! Surprisingly, the right brush will give you the most natural look possible, and make sure you get just the right amount of foundation too. It also means your foundation is always the same thickness!

2. A concealer brush

Again, I’ve always just used my fingers, but using a tiny sable concealer brush really does hide your imperfections! If you suffer with under eye circles, a brush with a narrow tip will hide them easily, and make sure you have full and even coverage. Perfect after all those late nights!

3. Bronzer

Hands up, who carries around a bronzer? Well you should! If all else fails, bronzer is an easy way to update your daytime look for a night out, and it’s also perfect for hiding your cheeks if you start to blush!

Prom is so exciting! I remember planning my prom dress, my hair, my jewelry … the hardest thing to plan, though, is make up! Do you choose smoky eyes or bright lips? It’s a mine field! I’ve gathered my favourite prom make up tips to ensure you look like a star in your photos!

1. Pick your eyes or your mouth

Make up products needed: Red and pink lipsticks, mascara, eye liner, eye shadow, false eyelashes, lip gloss
Tools needed: Mirror, eyebrow tweezers, eyelash curlers
Practice for best results: None!
Clear your diary for an hour, and wash your face. Then apply your eye makeup really carefully, and keep your lips understated with a clear gloss. If you aren’t sure on eye makeup colour, choose your favourite at the moment, since you can always change it later! Then take a picture. Wipe your face, and give it five minutes to dry and calm down. Then apply minimal eye makeup, and focus on your lips. Avoid brown lipstick, and try different pinks and reds. Take a picture again! Use these to decide whether you want to focus on your eyes or your lips, and to choose colours!

2. Perfect your skin

The next step is to make sure your skin looks flawless! Very few girls under 25 need to use all-over foundation, but it’s useful to have some that matches your skin tone for emergencies! If you don’t have any, head down to your nearest department store or Sephora’s. The staff are always happy to help and will let you try on plenty of colours and brands until you find one you love. Then practice applying the foundation to problem areas, with concealer, to give you an even and flawless skin tone. Remember to blend!

They’ve been taught the magic of the eyelash curlers, and now it’s our turn! Here are my top seven tips on curling your lashes…

Make sure your eyelashes are clean from make up! Use make up remover to get rid of old mascara and eye makeup, which will affect results!

Heat up your curlers. You can buy ones which heat themselves, but for much cheaper, you can buy metal curlers and heat them gently with a hairdryer.

Line up the warm curler with the bottom of your lashes, and hold for 10-30 seconds.

Remember that the longer you hold for, the curlier your lashes will be!

Never pull your curler up your eyelashes, as this can lead to your eyelashes coming out!

It’s a popular misconception that you should put mascara on first. Don’t! It’ll make your eyelashes clump and stick to the curler, which could lead to them being pulled out. Ouch!

Perfection is impossible, except if you have the luxury of talented makeup artists and incredible Photoshop skills. Without that, most celebrities are…well…normal just like any of us. It’s amazing to see what lies behind the facade of perfection that we are all exposed to. You really have to see these shocking pictures to believe it…

Okay the first picture….not so horrible. She looks a little plain and nerdy but pretty nonetheless. But the second picture…I’m not so sure.

2. Alicia Silverstone

From a distance, Alicia looks alright…pretty even. But up close, her skin looks a little blotchy. Well, nothing a little foundation and concealer can’t fix.

3. America Ferrera

She might look a little grumpy but as far as I can see, she has lovely skin! Not bad at all without makeup. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m comparing this look to her Ugly Betty look :)

Omg! Alien hair-do…puffy eyes….pale skin… Amy looks like a total disaster without her makeup. Then again, I’m not too fond of her even with the makeup on. Maybe, she wouldn’t look so bad if she gave up the excessive alcohol and drugs…

I have no complaints about how Anna looks without makeup….atleast in this picture.

In terms of eye makeup, is there anything sexier and more sophisticated than the classic Smoky Eye Look?

So, if you feel you are ready to join this fabulous team, and you too want to master the Smoky Eye technic, you came to the right place!

Simply follow the 7 easy steps below and before you know it, you’ll be rocking the gorgeous Smoky Eye Look yourself!  

Step 1 – Getting Your Eyes Ready

Begin by applying a light shade of concealer to the under eye area, and all over the top lid. Your mineral makeup foundation is a great concealer for this step and prepares your Eyes for the eyeshadow that you are going to apply.

Step 2 – Using the Liner

First, line both the top and bottom rims with an eye pencil, paying close attention to going into the lash line itself.

If you have small eyes apply liner starting from the middle of the under eye to the outside of the eye. If your eyes are large feel free to line from corner to corner.

Hint: If you are using liquid liner you can place dots on the lash line and then follow the dots to get a perfectly straight line. I knew those connect the dot puzzles I did as a kid would come in handy some day!

Step 3 – Adding the Shadow

With a small eye shadow brush or a q-tip, soften the edges of the eye pencil line.

Apply a dark shadow using a sponge-tip applicator, smudge brush or a q-tip directly over the penciled area and smudge. (If you prefer, you can use your finger tip.)

The shadow helps to set and soften the look.

If designer Christian Dior showed us the “whimsical cat eye look” for the runway show of the label during Fashion Week, let’s see what the house of Gucci has in store for us.

This fall and winter season, it is safe to say that bold eye makeup and almost-nude-not-even-sheer lips are in. If Christian Dior went all out in the catlike eye makeup of the models, Gucci went all rockstar glam.

Instead of huge false eyelashes, what we saw were uber-dark eyeliners, smoky eyeshadows in charcoal, grey and black and the just-the-right-red-shade for the lips.

The models’ hairs were parted in the middle, long and not sleek straight but naturally wavy.

I personally prefer this Gucci makeup trend rather than the super-bold cat eye statement made by Christian Dior.

All in all, the makeup trend that Gucci has can be described as a smoky-eyed, rockstar glam eye makeup.

I was thrilled to get to check out the backstage action at Peter Som this year – it’s one of my favorite shows every season and once again the lovely Gucci Westman was at the makeup table.

Gucci created a Kate Moss-inspired, undone, “day after” look using Lancome products, some of which are brand new – and of course, I can’t wait to get my hands on them!

The look started with “very Sixties, mannequin skin” that was achieved by matching the models’ skin tone rather than going tan or bronze. Cheeks were accented with Lancome Color Design Blush in Petticoat Pink, then given a bit of sheen with a fab new product – Ombre Glacee Cooling Gel Illuminator for Eyes and Face. It’s iridescent white with a bit of a greenish pink cast to it, and it looked like opalescent moonlight against the models’ skin. So gorgeous! We’ll have to wait though – Ombre Glacee isn’t available until next Spring!

Gucci’s technique for the eye makeup was so much fun to watch – she applied layers of mascara (new Courbe Virtuose), liquid liner (Artliner in Black), and kohl liner (Le Crayon Khol in Black Ebony) to top and bottom lashlines, and then smudged them off with a damp Q-tip! Lashes were then touched up with more Courbe Virtuose for a slightly clumpy (but not too spidery) 60’s effect. The look was slightly messy but still chic and sexy.

Two shades of pale pink lip color finished the look. This was one of my favorites of the week! (I tend to fall hard when the makeup artists use some fab new product that I can’t have…yet.)
