The benefits of breastfeeding your baby are now well documented, and attitudes towards breastfeeding mothers have certainly improved. National Breastfeeding Awareness Week is an annual event which helps promote this natural form of feeding among all sectors of the population. Health professionals are encouraged to run events and clinics where women can find out more about breastfeeding…

RSPB Great Garden Birdwatch – results are in!
If you took part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this year, you might be interested to know the results are now in. Over 400,000 people took part back in January, and results show the mild weather had a big impact on the figures, with less birds appearing in our gardens than previous years because of the abundance of food elsewhere. The top 10 results are as follows:…

British asparagus…grab it while you can!
For those of us concerned about food miles, there’s good news this month as good old British asparagus is back on the menu. During May and June you can turn your back on South American incomers, and opt instead for home grown green goodness!
Packed full of nutrients, and not too mention the aphrodisiac qualities, it truly is a super food. If you are stuck thinking of new ways to cook it, check out the fabulous British Asparagus website. It has lots of recipe ideas, along with a map of local growers. Great stuff!

Green Day get holier than thou over Darfur crisis
Cynics among you may think this post is really just an excuse for an old punk to show a picture of the lovely Green Day lads, but as they have just signed up to release a version of John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’ as part of Amnesty International’s Instant Karma: Campaign to save Darfur I think it’s more than justified! The single will be included on an album of John Lennon covers, featuring other artists like REM, U2 and Snow Patrol. All proceeds will go directly to Amnesty International.

National Vegetarian Week 21st – 27th May 2007
After 18 years I fell off the vegetarian bandwagon when I became pregnant. I decided to eat our fishy friends, but still refuse to eat anything else with a face! I will, however, still celebrate National Vegetarian Week which takes place from 21st to 27th May. The event is in it’s 15th year and is sponsored by genius veggie food manufacturers Cauldron Foods. There are many events taking place all over the country, including cookery demos, tasting sessions and talks on why becoming a veggie is not only great for your health but also for the planet. For instance, did you know that the methane…

Low carbon conference reveals big business is getting the message
Something amazing is clearly happening if 560 big-wigs in business are attending conferences to cut their carbon emissions. The Low Carbon World Conference held in London last week hosted some top names in UK business including senior representatives from Marks and Spencer, Google Inc. and KPMG. The event closed with 93% of business leaders committing to measure their organisation’s COproduction. Apparently, 59% revealed that they have a board member whose remit embraces sustainability. With many companies joining carbon-offsetting schemes there is no question that the environment is increasingly becoming a major player in how businesses see their future. Take this statement, for instance, made by Adrian Wyatt, CEO of Quintain Estates and Development PLC and the man behind the conference.
“In order to achieve a sustainable future we need a joined up approach to energy, fiscal and planning policy. If we walk away from this challenge we are endangering the future of capitalism as well as the planet.”

Fruity Friday – healthy eating initiative
May 25 is apparently going to be a ‘Fruity Friday’ in an initiative by JAZZ apples and the World Cancer Research Fund UK’s (WCRF). They aim to encourage you and me to take up our 5-a-day fruit and veg and keep us eating healthily. The project has been running for three years and this year will see 70,000 …

No rotten jokes about compost awareness week!
Look, I’m the first to admit that it’s not glamourous , but it’s the 7th annual Compost Awareness Week from Sunday 6th to Saturday 12th May. I mean the mere fact of there being seven of them is quite an achievement. I’m not sure people are going to wear compost on their lapelles, but the point is that we produce around 30 million tonnes of rubbish each year and over one third of an average UK household dustbin can be home composted. It’s an obvious thing to do, unless of course you live in flat.

International Dawn Chorus Day
If you happen to be up and about at 4.30am on 6th May (I am often, thanks to my young daughter!) then you can take part in International Dawn Chorus Day. It’s aim is to focus on the great things in nature and, for a while at least, to put out of your mind the problems our planet is facing. All over the world people will be getting up at the crack of dawn and stepping outside to listen to the wonderful dawn chorus. It’s going to be one of the biggest birdwatching events in history…

Dalby Forest eco friendly visitor centre opens
A new cutting edge, eco friendly, visitor centre has opened in the heart of the North York Moors. Dalby Forest visitor centre, a Forestry Commission property, has been constructed in natural materials and is the centrepiece of a £4.3m regeneration project. It’s main aim is to show how modern construction can be ‘green’ with the use of sustainable and local materials.
