Motorola one step closer to solar powered mobile phone
Motorola are one step closer to producing a mobile phone which will be powered entirely from solar energy. They have managed to create a screen which allows more light to pass through it than traditional LCDs, which means a fairly large solar cell can be placed behind it.

The New Green Consumer Guide
The New Green Consumer Guide by Julia Hailes was published on 21st May 2007. Written by the author of the original Green Consumer Guide, which was released way back in 1988, this is much more than an updated version. This new book has sections on home and garden, food and drink, electrical goods and the office, plus travel, transport, fashion and cosmetics. Each section gives advice, and information about which companies and which products are truly ‘green’ and which are not. The book is well written and makes going green possible for anyone.

Want a free real-time electricity monitor?
The Government is to propose free real-time energy monitors for all UK households which request one. The plan is to be put forward in the Governments Energy White Paper, obligating electricity suppliers to provide the monitors for free. A sensor is installed in your electric meter cupboard and wirelessly sends all your power consumption data to a portable display. Energy-conscious customers can track in real-time how different parts of the house or appliances are using electricity, how much it is costing and even simulate how much carbon is being emitted.

Green building store
My attempts at DIY tend to end with mangled fingers and wonky shelves, but that doesn’t stop me trying. If you’re a bit more efficient, the green building store could be an invaluable resource for any weekend projects.
The website does exactly what the name suggests, listing suppliers and products for all aspects of building, indoors and out. There’s also an information and advice section – and if it all gets too complicated, a list of professional environmentally-friendly architects, builders and craftspeople you can call in to do it for you.

Water-powered clock from Nigel’s Eco Store
The clocks have finally gone forward and it’s officially spring. If you’re missing that stolen hour from Sunday morning and need a new timepiece to help you adjust, there are a range of eco-friendly options out there.
I like the look of this water-powered multi-function clock from Nigel’s Eco Store. It’s £14.95 and features an alarm to get you out of bed as well as a temperature gauge so you can make sure it really is spring-like outside.

Making your office greener
Google employees are being given free bicycles to help reduce the environmental impact of their travel to work. The company has also installed solar panels at its HQ to provide green energy.
Although I’ll ask, I think it’s unlikely my employer will give me a bike. The story has made me think though: a lot of people spend more time at the office than at home, so what can companies do to lessen their environmental impact?
We all, I hope, know to turn off our computers when we leave and to avoid unnecessary printing, but if you or your employer would like to do more, consider switching to green suppliers.
The green electricity marketplace lists suppliers of green electricity by area, while the green stationery company offers everything from notepads and pens to computer supplies and desk accessories.
