10. Keep lips nude

By leaving color off of your lips, your eyes will stand out so much more. Some people try to add bright red lipstick with smokey eyes, but it just makes them look very clown-like. You need to either focus on your lips or your eyes, never both at the same time.

9. Add bright mascara

This is one of my favorite tips for perfect brown smokey eyes. Most of us tend to think that for a brown smokey eye, all colors have to be brown hues, in order to make the overall effect intriguing. But try a blue or purple mascara instead to make your eyes really stand out.

8. Try different liner types

You don’t have to stick to an eye liner that comes in a pencil. There are some amazing brands that require the use of a brush to apply it. There’s even a liquid liner that can have a much more dramatic effect to the overall creation. Experimentation is key.

I was sad to learn that stylist and fashion guru Isabella Blow, one of fashion’s most original figures, passed away at the age of 48. Blow, who was famous for her outrageous Philip Treacey hats, her bright red lipstick and her gorgeous eccentricities is credited with discovering Alexander McQueen and helping to launch the careers of British models such as Sophie Dahl. Blow died in the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in western England and she had recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. One thing I did not know about Isabella Blow was that she had been Anna Wintour’s assistant. Wintour is quoted as telling the Times: “I don’t think she ever did my expenses, but she made life much more interesting.” Truly, Blow’s presence on the fashion scene made everything a little more interesting. Even if you would never dare to wear some of the things she did, it was always good to know that someone could, and did. Her life itself was a work of art. She will be much missed.

I think she is sporting the bright red lipstick, but its actually appropriate here.

I must be confused. I look at the calendar, I see the month of January. I look at the thermometer, I see the low 50s (in Southern California, brrrr). The stars at the Golden Globes however, must be on some alternate plane of existence because for the most part they were dressed for a balmy summer night.

Forget those rules about not wearing white before Memorial Day, white was the look of the moment. Not winter white but bright white. Those wearing white included Sienna Miller, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Kate Winslet, Heidi Klum, Ellen Pompeo, Salma Hayek and Hayden Panettiere, shown here. That’s a whole lot of white. Blogdorf Goodman has an excellent breakdown of who is wearing what (complete with runway pics of the fashions in their original couture incarnations) and Just Jared has great photo galleries. Who wore white the best? As much as young Hayden here looks adorable, I give the nod to Kate Winslet in her simple draped white Ungaro. Worst white dress has to go to Cameron Diaz who paired her flounced Valentino with overly bright red lipstick for a very garish effect.
