That’s why I thought it was time to put an end to the doubts and fears we experience when getting ready for events with a dress-code and I’ve created a little cheat sheet with all 4 dress codes there are with easy explanations on what you are expected to wear in what case.

1. Black Tie

Other Versions: White Tie, Formal Black Tie, Creative Black Tie (usually involves a theme)

Men should dress in a smart suit or tuxedo, with an ironed, tucked in shirt and tie. Women get a bit more freedom, having the choice between long or cocktail dresses, in a wide range of colors.

My Experience:

This has got to be Maybelline’s most impactive mascara! It screams of glamour and excess, and could be compared to luxury brand Diorshow mascara. The first coat cleaned and separated my lashes ready to be veiled in the delectable black lacquer. I absolutely loved the results, and plan to recreate it in the future! I would save this mascara for big nights out but if you have a darker complexion or just love more impactive results then it could be a daily fix!

My Experience:

I normally stick to black or brown mascara as other colours remind me of the eighties too much and as much fun as I had, it was a hideous time for fashion! I was stunned by these colour combinations, instantly attracted to the Bordeaux shade as it’s my all time favourite red! However, I tested the brown as it would suit my fair complexion best.

The brown mascara went on smoothly without clumping and covered each of my lashes evenly and thickly. My next step was to apply the gold colour, I didn’t want to overdo it so I used it sparingly. I was impressed with the result, it looked quite subtle and I liked the way it caught the sunlight. I’m not sure I would use this every day but if you want to liven up your complexion this may be perfect for you!

My Experience:

After applying this mascara to one eye, I compared it to the other and I could hardly tell the difference! This mascara does a great job of combing out and separating my lashes, but not much else. There was minimal lengthening and zero volume. I think this mascara needs to concentrate on its defining aspects and less on transcending nature!

My Experience:
I was surprised by this mascara – it didn’t create the thick lashes it promised but it did make my lashes look longer! So I would recommend this mascara as a good lengthening mascara even though it’s called ‘Super Thick Lash Mascara’! On application the brush separated and defined my lashes with minimal clumping but I just couldn’t see any thickening, nevermind super-thickening! I tried another coat and that’s when I noticed the extra length but still no thickness. Confusing! I had to double check the packaging to make sure I had picked out the right one! On the plus side, it wore beautifully all day without a hint of smudging or flaking.

I found this mascara teased my short, straight lashes into a nice curl and made them appear visibly longer. It was easy to apply and it lifted the little corner lashes boosting the curl. The formula was quite smooth although the second coat started to look like it might clump, it didn’t in the end but there wasn’t much separation. I didn’t experience any smudging or flaking and the curl lasted for hours.

My Experience:

I’m always influenced by a product’s name, so this one got me excited! I imagined exquisite results from this Cover Girl mascara. The straight classic brush was easy to manage and the formula was a nice consistency…until it reached its destination! It coated my lashes extremely unevenly and didn’t achieve anything in terms of length, volume, definition. I think this is a really poor mascara, I’m thoroughly disappointed and also surprised this carries the Cover Girl logo as it isn’t up to their usual standard. It is very cheap, but there are cheaper mascaras that get better results than this. I guess it does do one thing it claims to – maintain a natural look! I definitely didn’t look like I was wearing any mascara!

It was a very disappointing result. I didn’t see anything remotely special about the brush – my lashes have looked more defined and separated with other brands. This mascara is all talk and no action!

My Experience:

I liked the results from this mascara but I didn’t see any dramatic increase in volume. There was some thickening, definition, lengthening but nothing major or miraculous! My lashes felt really soft and it’s always good to know I’m getting some vitamins! The brush did an amazing job of fanning out my lashes as it combed, framing my eyes. The colour was rich, glossy and coated each individual lash. Overall, a good product but I’m just not convinced about the six times theory!
