Evason Hideaway & Spa at Yao Noi

A new luxury resort will open by mid of this year in Yao Noi, Thailand: the Evason Hideaway & Spa at Yao Noi. Here’s what’s in store:

All villas have open-style bathrooms, creating an atmosphere of space and light within and boast magnificent views of the bay and surrounding forestation. Each villa also features its own infinity-edged pool with sundeck, creating an illusion of infinity between pool and bay, and reinforcing a feeling of seclusion.

Not enough pampering? Get this:

Each villa is attended by a butler who is trained to anticipate every whim. The butler service is designed to create a new and unique concept for house guests, where Hideaway and Innovative Style exemplified from arrival to departure.

Ahhh… the life. Preview more photos, here.

Giving Valentine’s Gifts in Japan and Korea

As I’ve said in a previous post, while a lot of the more cosmopolitan Asian countries celebrate Valentine’s Day, others don’t. Some recognize it, but do in an Asian way.

In Japan, for example, it’s the women who give gifts on this day. Aside from that, as Melissa pointed out, people are also obliged to give close colleagues or associates chocolates to each other even if they feel no romantic feelings. Men, who were lucky to have received gifts on Feb 14 reciprocate the gesture on March 14, usually with a more expensive gift.

What happens to men who don’t receive gifts on V-Day?

[snip] in Korea, the ladies commemorate Valentine’s Day just like the ladies in Japan. Men who didn’t receive anything would gather together on the 14th of April, called the Black day!, to drown their sorrows by eating noodles in black sauce.

More on Valentine’s and White Day Celebration in Japan from Japan-Guide. And here’s an English teacher’s account of Valentine’s Day in Korea. An entertaining read!

Where Will You Be on Valentine’s Day?

So, what are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

In a survey conducted by WorldHotels, quite a significant of travelers — 75%! — celebrate “Cupid’s Day”. A significant number of these will book dinner at a favourite restaurant, book a romantic trip abroad –or arrange for a romantic hide-away trip.

What’s it gonna be for you? You taking advantage of the hotel and resto offers around?

Of course, not everyone celebrates this day. For a lot, it’s just a ploy to make shops earn more money. Well, I do, too, but I hey it’s fun and makes me feel fuzzy and warm, so why not go along with it?

The Rib Room & Bar at the Landmark Bangkok

Here’s a new bar in Bangkok where you can chill out and get “probably the best steaks in Bangkok”: The Rib Room & Bar on the 31st floor of the Landmark Bangkok Hotel.

From its contemporary design, exhilarating interiors and incredible
Sweeping views of Bangkok to its cutting edge kitchens serving the very Best steaks and gourmet French cuisine, the RR & B has it all.

At least, like the Sirocco Rooftop Restaurant, you can get a few hours of reprieve from the pollution while you dine al fresco with a breathtaking view.

Hard Rock Hotel to Open in Penang, Malaysia

If you love rock n’ roll, then you gotta love the Hard Rock chain of restos and hotels. By the end of next year, there’ll be a Hard Rock hotel in Malaysia to welcome you, too. The third in Asia (the others are in Bali, Indonesia and in Pattaya, Thailand), this 255-room hotel will rise in Penang, where the Casaurina Beach resort used to be (it closed in December 2006).

Until then there’s the Hard Rock Cafe in Penang. You don’t get to stay the night but if you want something well, un-Malaysian, I guess, there’s a place to check out. From their website:

To heck with local food and sights! Who cares about taking in the “culture”? Listen, if you’ve got a hankering for a burger and fries, or you need the lifeblood of classic rock coursing through your veins, look no further than here, good friends. We’re rockin’ at the Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur like a big ol’ American rock lobster.

Up to you, folks.

Don Muang Airport in Bangkok to Re-Open to International Flights

If you’re heading to Bangkok sometime in April and beyond, and you think you’ll land on the newly opened Suvarnabhumi airport, well, don’t be so sure. Just today, the Thai government has decided that Don Muang will be re-opened for international flights. Some airlines will be re-directed back to the old airport to ease air traffic while some runways and other facilities at the Suvarnabhumi airport are being repaired. will be closed for repairs.

It could be that the budget airlines will be affected, but at this point, no details have yet been released. Keep an eye on these developments, and verify with your airline, especially if you’re traveling with connecting flights from Bangkok. You don’t want to land in one airport and catch your connecting flight in the other!

Hopefully the authorities get to update the info on the official Don Muang web site soon.

Book Early and Get Early Bird Savings

“The early bird catches the worm.” That’s Tiger Airways’ motto for their current promo. Book early enough and you can find fares as low as S$1.99 one-way. For example, I tried checking the fares online, and saw that if you book now, you can get a one-way fare from Singapore to Phuket in July for just S$1.88.

Some people say they get the best deals by booking last minute. I say save yourself the stress and book way ahead instead. Plan your travel months ahead and you’ll be surprised how much you can save, not only on airfare, but also on hotel and travel package deals!
