Still life with metrobus

“You laugh again, I’m going to pop you.”

Notes on how to behave:

  • don’t poke your kid in the chest with the point of your umbrella
  • Don’t slap your kid for smiling at you
  • Don’t tease your kids until they cry or look at you with murder in their eyes.

If you tell your kids they are bad, worthless and horrid long enough and often enough and loud enough, they will start to believe you. You sure that’s the message you want your kids to learn?

And in honor of spring having finally sprung, I will leave you with this simple, fashionista tip:

White undies under white pants = big VPL/VP no no.

If you won’t wear a thong, be sure to wear underwear that matches the color of your skin as closely as possible.

And remember: skin-tone BAND-AIDS aren’t.

Introducing Hippyshopper’s new editor: Abi Silvester

Some of you may have noticed that there’s a new editor in town. Abi Silvester has recently joined the Shiny Media staff and is now the full time editor of Hippyshopper. Camilla Chafer, editor of Bridalwave and regular writer on Shiny Shiny, has also joined the Hippyshopper team, along with some other lovely new contributers. Abi used to work over on magazine Alt.Wear, but now she spends her days searching out green stories, eying up green products and drinking copious cups of tea. You can find out more about her by reading this Q&A she filled in for us.

Name: Abigail Silvester
Aliases: Abi, Absinthecity, or sometimes even ‘the Green Fairy’

Shiny Job:
Editor of Hippyshopper
and writer for various Shiny sites.

Hometown: London

How green is your home?
Not nearly as green as I’d like it to be as it’s old and badly insulated, but I’m making improvements, with the help of energy saving gadgets and lifestyle changes like beating housemates into submission over heating usage…

Best green habits: I’ve been a strict veggie since the age of 7, I walk everywhere I can, I make a habit of switching stuff off, and I’m the house recycling Nazi.

Guiltiest habits:
Long, hot bubble baths…*sigh*.
I’ll give them up when I can afford to install a decent shower!

Five favourite web 2.0 sites (besides shiny ones):
Eat the Seasons
Post Secret
The Hunger Site
Last FM
Livejournal

Favourite Green Hangouts
I adore Food for Thought in Covent Garden, a traditional veggie haven serving up a different dish each day. It’s the only place I’m prepared to queue for! I’m also a regular at Luscious Organic on High Street Ken.

Last 3 gigs you went to:
Depeche Mode, XPQ21 (it’s a goth thing) and Idiot Son. I’m a real genre-hopper.

Last 3 books you bought:
The Green & Black’s chocolate cook book (not for me, but for a damn good cook I visit from time to time!)
The first book in the Transmetropolitan series and Hospital by Toby Litt.

Last 3 DVDs you bought:
Al Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ ” scary but essential viewing, Nathan Barley (OK, that was a present from the boyf’, but I’m a big fan of this much-maligned series), and, er, Will ‘O’ the Wisp.

What have you got in your pocket:
Newspaper clippings on green issues (honest gov!), tickets to a recent comedy gig, an earring in the shape of an apple, a hairpin, and one of Catwalk Queen’s ‘I love what you’re wearing’ badges.

What colour toothbrush do you have:
Purple

What song would you want played at your funeral:
‘Ding Dong the witch is Dead?’

If you were a car, what would you be:
a Smart Car.

Meet the b5media Travel & Culture Bloggers

The Carnival of Hope

I love reading Susan Palwick’s writings, on faith, healing, and science fiction, among other things. Every month she does a Carnival of Hope on her blog, Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good.

Absolutely worth a read. I’m still amazed that one writer’s kid survived a fall from an upper story window. *shudder*

Be hopeful, everyone. And while you’re at it, you can check out Susan’s latest collection of short stories, The Fate of Mice:

while you’re waiting for this to be released in June:

Abercrombie And Fitch Comes To UK

Spring is in the air…

Now I’ve got Frank Sinatra stuck in my head. A lot of doo be doo-be doo’s and such. Lilting cotton dresses. Sunglasses. A tall glass of something at an afternoon cafe.

Spring is such a hopeful time of year. We begin to slough off the chill of winter, and look for inspiration. Brilliant color. Balmy breezes.

b5media celebrates spring, a time of hope and renewal, on the Family and Relationships channel carnival. Definitely worth the read!
