Steve Martin's Dad Was Evil

Steve Martin barely talked to his father after taking a beating at age 9, the star reveals in his upcoming memoir, “Born Standing Up.”

The Post’s Kyle Smith reports the young Martin was eating a frozen dinner in front of the TV when, he writes, “My father muttered something to me, and I responded with a mumbled, ‘What?’

He shouted, ‘You heard me,’

thundered up from his chair, pulled his belt out of its loops, and inflicted a beating that never seemed to end.

The next day I was covered in welts and wore long pants and sleeves to hide them at school.”

Nevertheless, Martin says he resolved, “with icy determination, that only the most formal relationship would exist between my father and me, and for perhaps 30 years, neither he nor I did anything to repair the rift.”2

The book, due in December from Scribner, has hilarious episodes, too.2

Once, Martin met Elvis Presley in Vegas at a show where Martin was opening for Ann-Margret.

Later, Elvis took the comic aside and told him, “Son, you have an ob-leek sense of humor.”

Elvis then proudly showed Martin the two pistols and a derringer he was carrying.2
