Preeti Desai, 25-year-old British-born, on Tuesday became the first person of Indian origin to win the Miss Great Britain title, replacing original winner Danielle Lloyd after she was stripped off the award for reportedly dating Judge Teddy Sheringham and agreeing to pose for Playboy magazine.
After Kiran Desai, winner of Booker prize, another Desai girl in UK has created a record. This girl from Guisborough, North Yorks will now represent Britain in the Miss Universe beauty pageant contest.
“People were always telling my mum I should go into modelling, even when I was little,” an excited Preeti told the newspaper. Preeti, clinched the title after she got the maximum number of text messages and phone votes by readers of the Sun newspaper.
Within hours of the Sun announcing its choice for Miss GB 2006, sections of the UK’s Indian community told this paper it was “good. But it’s hardly something that we can expect to have as a role-model for our daughters and sisters posing in underwear and so on”.
In a reference to Desai’s notionally rural origins back home in India, the Sun patronisingly added that the prize was “not bad for a beauty contest novice whose mum, Hema, arrived in Britain after being brought up in a poverty-stricken Indian village”.
5ft 8in sexy Preeti Preeti and her sister, Anjlee, were the only Asians at their school in Middlesbrough. As a result, and thanks to her raven hair and exotic skin tone, Preeti got lots of attention. Instead, she went into beauty therapy and managed a salon for three years before deciding she needed a change. “I wanted something interesting to tell the grandkids,” Preeti explains.
Preeti’s family - mother Hema, father Jitu, and sister Anjlee are ecstatic at her win. Preeti Desai’s mother said, “When she was crowned Miss Great Britain she rang to tell me and said, ‘The crown is for you.’ I burst into tears. I felt as if I won that crown. I felt as if I am Miss Great Britain. She only wants to see me happy both my girls do.” Preeti Desai gave all credit to her mum who is recovering from a serious illness.
“When I was 18 I decided to leave work and stay at home full time with her. We wanted to see her smile again. That`s why winning this contest means so much, because it makes her happy - and that is priceless,” Preeti said.
