1

The Wrong Brush

It's important to use the right beauty tools when applying makeup because it makes a difference in the overall appearance and evenness of your application. A fluffy powder brush works well for a light "dusting" of powder, such as a setting powder, and a denser powder brush for powder foundation.

2

The Wrong Product for Your Skin Type

It's easy to get confused and overwhelmed by allll the makeup products out there! The key to success though is first knowing your skin type. Are you oily, dry or combo? Do you need heavy or light coverage? Know the answer to these questions and you're set! Additionally, if you simply love powder products, make sure the finish and consistency works well for your skin type!

3

Your Storage Habits

It's important to store your powders (and makeup in general) in a cool, dark place. If you store powder in a damp environment, such as your bathroom, the product will break down over time, become clumpy, and can even change pigmentation! To extend the life of your products, simply remember that storage matters!

4

Using Too Much Product

When using powder, less is always more! You want a thin layer for sure- too much or too many layers create the dreaded cake face that we all want to avoid! If you happen to use too much powder (which is easy to do), use a clean brush or flat top brush to blend out the excess. Or, spray your face with a setting mist which will give you more of a dewy finish!

5

Using the Wrong Shade!

Using the correct shade of foundation for your skin tone is crucial for a perfect makeup look. Too dark and you'll end up splotchy throughout the day (plus having lines along your chin isn't pretty!). Too light though and you look like a ghost face! However with powder, it's best to opt for slightly lighter than darker because powder tends to oxidize when it contacts oil.

You Leave on the Excess

Have you ever had your picture taken with a flash and saw the horrors of powder flash back? Yikes! This happens when you have on too much powder and don't remove the excess. To avoid this, snap a selfie with the flash on and examine your makeup. If it looks fine, you're set! But if you see white patches, you need to remove any excess by blending with powder brush or spraying with a setting spray!

You Forget Primer!

For any type of foundation, primer is always a must for a smooth application-especially for powder products! Powdered foundation tends to wear a little patchy but with a good primer, you have the perfect base for lovely, even skin!

Next time you apply your makeup, I hope you keep these powder tips in mind! And since makeup tips are always helpful, do you have any you'd like to add?
