7 DIY Skin Care Remedies ...

I love DIY skin care remedies. Nothing pleases me more than using things I already have (or can get relatively cheap) to improve my appearance and skin health. Knowing that there are no harsh chemicals or skin irritating additives in what I am putting on my skin makes me extremely happy. These DIY skin care remedies will help you no matter what skin type you may have. Since you already have most of the ingredients sitting around your house, it’s worth a try!

Dry Skin?

If you need DIY skin care remedies because your skin is dry and flaky, I assure you this quick and simple solution will help you out. I know that there are a lot of lotions, creams and serums on the market that claim they will take care of dry skin, but the outcome is often that your skin switches from dry and cracked to oily and shiny. If going from one extreme to the other is not what you are looking for, try this trick!

What you need:
½ Avocado
¼ Cup Honey

**What to do:
**Mash the avocado and mix in the honey. Smear this wonderfully natural mask over your problem areas and allow it to remain on your face for 10 minutes. Wash it off and enjoy healthier looking skin without all the oils and artificial chemicals!

2

Oily Skin?

If your skin tends to be oily or greasy, it can be hard to find a product that takes care of the issue all day long. Most of the items you’ll find on the store shelves will help temporarily remove the oils, but this DIY remedy will remove the oils naturally without drying your skin out or introducing harsh ingredients. Some people who use this only need to do it every few days, but if your skin is especially oily you may need to do it more often.

What you need:
Grapefruit (or Orange or Lemon)
Dry Oatmeal

**What to do:
**Make a paste with the juice from the grapefruit and the dry oatmeal. Apply to any areas that are especially oily and allow the paste to dry before removing.

If you notice that you’re still becoming a bit greasy throughout the day, make a 50/50 mixture of lemon juice (helps break down the oils) and water, pour it into a tiny spray bottle ($1.00 at Wal-Mart) and carry it with you in your purse for a quick skin refresher!

3

Itchy Skin?

If you suffer from itchy skin, or even eczema, using store-bought solutions can often worsen the effects. If the skin is already irritated, adding harsh chemicals or essential oils (especially lemon!) can result in a rash, stinging skin or increased itchiness. I have one very important tip for you: Oatmeal is your friend! Oatmeal soothes skin irritation, itching and burns; it is possibly my favorite ingredient in DIY skin care remedies. It is relatively cheap and you can buy it in bulk… which translates to - I use it ALL the time! This is just one remedy to try if you’ve had enough of scratching your skin to shreds.

What you need:
Oatmeal
Cheesecloth (If you don’t have any, you can use a clean, thin sock)
Water

**What to do:
**Mix the oatmeal with water, keeping the ratio 1:1.

Pour the oatmeal into the cheesecloth (or sock) and secure it.

Shower or bathe using the oatmeal sachet as a loofa to wash your body. It will help make your skin soft and beautiful and will soothe that nagging itch.

Rough Elbows?

If your elbows, knees or heels are rough and cracked, there are several different products already in your home that you can use to help heal the skin. Slathering the problem area with Vaseline, wrapping it in plastic wrap and leaving it on overnight works wonderfully. If this sounds a little too messy for you, don’t worry, you can scale it down a bit.

What you need:
¼ cup Brown Sugar
1/8 cup Olive Oil
Chapstick

**What to do:
**First, you will need to mix the brown sugar and olive oil together to form a paste. Scrub the affected region with the paste to remove the dead skin. Then apply chapstick to the skin. Yes, chapstick. It works on dry, cracked lips and it works on the rest of your body too.

5

Stretch Marks?

However you got your stretch marks, it is my guess that you would love for them to disappear. While there is no way to make them instantly vanish, there are ways to help them heal faster. This isn’t a miracle cure; it simply shortens the amount of time it takes for them to fade.

What you need:
1 Cup fresh pineapple
½ Cup fresh papaya
½ Cup pure cane sugar

**What to do:
**Puree all of the ingredients in a blender and spread over the stretch marks. After 15-20 minutes, rinse and dry the skin.

This is essentially an all-natural chemical peel that helps remove older skin cells and increases the growth rate of the new skin.

Acne?

I had horrible acne when I was a teenager. Pimples always embarrassed me and made me want to hide my face behind my hair (which, by the way, actually makes acne worse). I wish that I had been into DIY remedies when I was younger but I had other things on my mind (boys), so I hadn’t tried this treatment until recently. I’m closing in on 30 but I still get the occasional outbreak, and it still makes me want to hide my face behind my hair. This nifty little trick, however, makes me look and feel a million times better!

What you need:
6-8 uncoated aspirin tablets
Bottled Water
1 tsp Organic Honey

**What to do:
**Put the aspirin (start out with 6) in a dish and add just enough water to help them dissolve. Stir until a paste-like consistency is established. If the paste is runny, add more aspirin but do not exceed 8 pills. If the paste is too dry, add a tad more water. Mix in the honey and apply the concoction to your skin. Leave on for 7-15 minutes.

Use no more than twice a week, and this needs to be made fresh every time you use it.

7

Blackheads?

While my acne problem has been minimal since I’ve been in my late 20s, my blackheads are a whole different story. My nose and my chin get blackhead outbreaks that make me crazy! I love pore strips. I hate having to spend so much money on them. Lately I have been making my own at home and they work just as well, if not better, and cost hardly anything! If you are plagued with blackheads, you must try this!

What you need:
1 Tbs UNFLAVORED gelatin
1 Tbs Milk
Toothbrush

**What to do:
**Mix the milk and gelatin together and pop it in the microwave for 10 seconds. Allow it to cool to a tolerable temperature and apply the mix to your blackhead infested areas with the toothbrush. Allow to dry completely and then peel the mask off. As you peel it off your blackheads are removed from your skin, just like the store-bought strips!

I sincerely hope that you give these amazing DIY skin care remedies a shot. Replacing the chemicals and man-made compounds with (mostly) natural items will make your skin look and feel healthier. What are some excellent DIY skin care remedies that you use?

Thanks Lisa and Andrea! I'm gonna try it RIGHT NOW! ;)

@kerith maye Williams; I've personally used this method. Take your usual shower routine and use this method last so it can still be on your skin. If you use a thin sock the oatmeal will not come out. Your skin will just absorb the juices coming threw the tiny holes in the sock. Hope this helps:)

PORES!

Is the acne one bad if you do it a lot?

I have both oily and acne problems, will my skin be over dry if I do both treatments and how would you recommend I do it (often)?
