Who hasn’t spent hours trying to decide what type of lipstick would make their lips most luscious, and what colours would suit them best? I know I have! So, here are my top ten rules for picking the best lipstick for you.
1. Thin lips …
Colors to Try: Peach, pale pink, light beige, clear
Colors to Avoid: Red, dark red, dark purple, any shade of brown
If you have thin lips it’s better to avoid dark and bright colors and settle for softer, natural sheer ones. Start with outlining your lips with a lip pencil that’s close to the natural color of your lips and then fill them in with light pink or light coral or beige lipgloss. A friend of mine who has thin lips often uses Lip Plumping glosses that make her lips look so much fuller.
Lipsticks to Try…

- Lorac Breakthrough Performance Lipstick SPF 15 in It Girl Coral – $22
- Yves Saint Laurent ROUGE PUR SHINE SPF15 Sheer Lipstick in Shimmering Pink – $30
- Urban Decay Lipstick in Midnight Cowboy – $22
- Sephora Lip Last – $14
2. Full lips …
Colors to Try: Red, soft pink, berry, mauve
Colors to Avoid: None
With full lips, you have quite a few options. Try not to buy plumping glosses, and instead apply a small amount of clear gloss to the middle of your top lip for the same affect. I have naturally full lips, and find that I don’t need lip liner, and rose colours look the most amazing!

Hi!
I am an Indian, so have a slightly dark complexion, not very dark, but on the brown side, so pinks and bright reds usually dont suit me.. The problem is that I also have a dark upper lip which is slightly thin and a light lower lip which is more fuller.. could you please help me with the color that would suit my complexion and how do I deal with the darker upper lip problem?
Swati,
The best lipstick shade for anyone is usually one or two shades darker than their natural lip color. Bright reds are off for sure but you can try a darker shade of red. I also think plums and browns would look good. As for your upper lip, I’m not sure how you could cover it up but I could offer suggestions on reducing the darkness. Try almond oil on your upper lips. Lemon juice mixed with honey should also work on regular application. Also beetroot juice. Most importantly use lipsticks that are of good quality… Hope that helped :)
