I'm gonna say this again because it cannot be said enough; this article is absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much Faiza for being able to inform non-Muslims about real jihad.
Very thought provoking I really appreciate that someone put such information forward just to make people more aware of the real Islam and its perspectives and wash away misconceptions about Muslims so thumbs up to you faiza :)
@Sarah Moustafa, I'm sorry to hear that your classmates wouldn't listen to you. It's unfortunate that some teachers don't do their jobs and actually educate their students. Your Jihad is an amazing one. Power to you sister.
I adore this. This is something people really need to see. I realized how misinterpreted the term jihad is at school in history class, when my teacher associated it with war, and despite my efforts to explain it properly, she wouldn't listen. Jihad is really just a struggle against yourself to obey God and your faith. My jihad is wearing hijab in this country <3
Thank you for posting this! I am glad to say I am one of the few non Muslim Americans who knew the truth behind the word jihad :). I also now how to correctly pronounce Muslim haha . In all seriousness though, people need to understand other religions before judging them and everyone who follows them. Few people do not define everyone.
@Gheda Mahmoud I hate it too, especially when it affects children. I admire Muslim women for their strength and beauty when in the face of adversity. I loved this article and shared it with many already! May love and kindness surround you always 💙
@SDGirl4Ever, You're inspirational yourself, so good to hear this articulated in such a lovely manner. But every one says their school is the best in America hehe
Thank you for such an amazing article, and thank you for showing the true meaning of the word jihad, I cant stress enough how we muslims are honestly normal people... I hate how our image is stained...
- Sisterhood matters.
- Loving yourself before anything ie to never underestimate who you are as a person.
- appreciate the environment, even if it means to appreciate that green grass growing in your backyard. Trust me, once you start appreciating the little things in life, you'll start appreciating the bigger things in life.
- take every knock back as a lesson that is making you a better person, experienced and stronger to deal with even the toughest of situations
- I'm going to emphasise the "educate" people who are narrow minded or judge someone based on stereotypes. We're too often bombarded with stereotypical images and messages by TV media and what not, it sometimes gets difficult to stop being so stereotypical.
- Strive to do what you want, don't so something uncomfortable. If someone says you're doing this all wrong or do it this way, but you're not comfortable, simply keep doing what you want to do. There's no one who knows you better than you know yourself, they don't know what feels right for you or wrong for you. They don't know what it's like to be you.
- stop thinking about what others will think about you, I'd say that worrying too much about how others see you is basically similar to being oppressed - you have to stand out and be bold about who you are. But if you don't want to stand out or be bold, then simply act on your beliefs without worrying about others. Stand up to what makes you happy!
- stay away from negativity, and keep that positive energy around. Negativity includes things such as anger, resentment, "toxic friends". These things bring stress and most likely will start polluting or turn you into a bitter person.
- be happy!
@SDGirl4Ever i have a copy of the bible on my iphone to help me better understand my christians friends ... am a muslim and my jihad is to be a better person that represent islam! big hug X3
Thank you for such a beautiful article. Not only did you shed light on a word that the world has associated with terror and should its true meaning. But you have also shown the world that even though Muslims women have a different ideology and different dress code our daily lives consists of wanting and striving for the same goals as many other women .
Masha'Allah beautiful article sister that was very inspiring to read and such a wonderful way to display the actual meaning of the word jihad and it's struggles and hardships! Look forward to reading more of your articles! :-)
I would like to encourage everyone to check out the MyJihad campaign that inspired me to write this article. You can find the amazing site at www.myjihad.org :-)
Most beautiful article and thank you for showing others the true meaning of the word and showing insight in a positive way. Your wise and I hope you spread wisdom amongst others :)
Heather
Thank you for the comment! It is truly a fantastic article and really takes back the word. :)
Oh wow. I love the picture and I love this article. My Jihad is def #1 #5 #9 and #12. Especially #12. Great article. You're new to AWS and I'm so glad you're here. You're a really amazing writer and I love your work. :-)
@SDGirl4Ever, The word has been hijacked by Muslims who follow their own version of Islam. One that benefits their own twisted ideas that have nothing to do with Islam itself. I'm so happy my article helped you. Big Hug.
Let me start by saying that I don't have any Muslim friends. Everything I know about Muslims and the word Jihad comes from the TV, Internet, and newspapers and none of it is good. I had no idea at all that this is what the word actually meant. I go to one of the best schools in the United States and I have never heard it explained like this. I don't know what that says about our educational systems or why we're paying thousands of dollars on a mediocre education. It's almost like they relish people's ignorance. :-( The world we live in. Ugh.
Moving on... you're an amazing and brave woman to write this and you have changed my perspective of Muslims altogether. I was never a racist person, but I'll admit that I hated hearing the word Jihad because it was linked to everything bad and ugly. But now I know better. I'll def be spreading the word and sharing this article with my everyone on my mailing list. With that said... MY JIHAD is to help others better understand the true meaning of Jihad because taking back this word means helping Muslims reclaim their broken image. :-) I may not be Muslim but that's how we make the world a better place. We're all people of the book and should help each other any way we can.
@Jean, Stop-STOP- my head is inflating in a way that they might not allow me aboard the plane tomorrow and I need to get to New York. ;-) lol Thank you very much. Very flattered.
Thank you, Faiza!!! I too am sorry to say I had the incorrect meaning stuck in my head. I have already made it a point to set the true meaning right with my parents this afternoon. Thank you for bringing us all together as one, because I don't know a single young (or old) woman that doesn't struggle with at least one Jihad on your list. We all have the same struggles (some more than others) I know I struggle with many. I will be adding your blog to my list and look forward to learning much more from you... I have a feeling you have a lot to offer us. Blessings ~
My jihad is stop mouthing off to my father every time he brings up the subject of marriage and become a more obedient daughter. Yea, right...... but I'm going to try!!!
@JessWest, That was very honest of you to say and I'm humbled and honored by your words. I'm glad my article educated you on the proper use of the word and I'm flattered that you will reference it in the future to educate others as-well. GREAT Jihad!
@Laila, May Allah (SWT) bless you too sister. I'm glad you like the article. I also struggle with Jihad #5 as my family is in a hurry to get me married, but I'm just not meeting Mr.Right. Stay strong, make duaa, and know that he's out there and will come when you least expect it. That's how I look at it. :-)
Brilliant, Faiza! I did know that this was the true meaning of jihad. Christians are familiar with jihad in the same sense, but we don't have a name for it. It's a part of spiritual growth. Ok, some Christians may not recognise it, but I am sure some Muslims don't do anything with it either.
My current jihad is actually to just be, very hard for a girl who is used to perpetually fighting!!
Awesome article sister. Finally a cool Muslim sister to represent us in a way that doesn't make us look like crazy murderers that are trying to take over the world using "Jihad". MYYYYY Jihad... :-) is to be a better daughter to my parents and a better older sister to my siblings.
I swear I had no idea this was the true meaning of Jihad. I'm so embarrassed to say that I thought the word was something that dealth with killing innocent people for stupid religious reasons. This is the complete opposite of what I thought. I feel very stupid now. I was one of the people to use the word the wrong way. I'll know better going forward. My Jihad (feels weird to say that) lol but anyway... My Jihad will be to educate people on the real use of the word Jihad...using this article as an example. :-)
Faiza Rammuny, may Allah bless you sister. This is an amazing article and helps people understand us Muslims on a completely different level than what the media puts out every day. I have a Jihad number 5. I want to get married so bad but it's been so hard for me to find anyone. I get so depressed everyday to see all my friends getting engaged and I'm still sitting here. IsA Allah will answer my prayers and this will non't be a Jihad anymore for me. :-)
My Jihad is at least six of the ones you have here Faiza. :-) But I have another :-) My Jihad is to help my mother make it through her battle with cancer. I think I used that correctly right? If yes then that's myJihad.
That is what I love about this author. I follow her blog and you always learn something new about her culture and religion, and most of what've learned has been eye-opening to say the least. Great entry, Ms. Rammuny.
