I prefer to visit ancient places that has quite a history and help people to open their's minds. As I am living in Poland, I can reccomend few places to visit here: the fisrt one is - a great Niemodlin Castle. One day it will be added to top 10 Castles in Poland it has very interesting story around it there is lots of stuff going on .Apparently there was 10 truck of gold hidden in the castle and some time ago they ever discover new secret tunnels. For more information Check out Niemodlin Website.

My absolute favorite place in Europe is called Sevedsplan, a part of the Swedish city Malmoe. Sevedsplan's beauty is stunning, and with the harmonic atmosphere and lovely people it's absolutely great. The best trip I've ever made!
Heather
Hey ikinga! That sounds beautiful! I have a trip planned to Paris next year and I can not wait to see everything there!
ikinga
We don't have "rivers" in Venice, but "canals". :) It is the sea, Venice is composed by many small islands and they were unified with bridges.
Anyway, I live in a small and gorgeous medieval city just 30min from Venice. I have been around a lot all over N. Italy, Alps, most European capitals etc. I really think Italy is amazing with many things to choose from.
I think Rome is the most amazing city in Europe (followed by Paris). Secondly, Venice is also amazing but touristy. Tuscany is simply stunning, especially if you drive around and visit smaller villages, like San Gimigniano. Going in 3 weeks to 5 Terre ;).
As for the beaches, Maddalena islands (Sardegna, Italy) has stunning pink beaches.
Oh, and I forgot: The Dolomities!
Sheila

Portugal has some amazing places to see as well but people dont realize it because it is a small country. Lisbon, Porto, and Algarve are some of the most beautiful places to visit in Europe as well. Venice is nice in pictures but smells awful
Marty
Thank you for this lovely list.. I love to travel and the places in here are idyllic, especially the Greek islands and Hallstatt :))

Golden Oldie says: Don't miss Budapest... amazing city!!
michael
alot of these places are big major cities and you can find alot more beauty in smaller towns as they are untouched in alot of ways. I am from Australia and I live in a beautiful little town in France called Sarlat-La-Caneda in the dordogne, there is so much history there and alot of good restaurants. I recommend to everyone to check it out at least once.
Danka
Lee McQueen: Are you sure about Naples and Greece? In July/August? It is going to be incredibly hot and busy during the summer in those places. Why not Paris - Switzerland - Cinque Terre - Florence Rome or Venice before going to Vienna or Prague? You could do that by train.
Anonymous
That many cities in Italy alone? A lil' overrated, I'd say. As a Scandinavian I would definitely recommend Lapland, esp. the very northern of Norway.
Anonymous
My list:
1-BARCELONA
2- AMALFI COAST
3- ITALIAN RIVIERA
4- ROME
5- VENICE
6-FLORENCE
7-LONDON
8-PARIS
9-LUGANO
10-LUCERNE
Beth
That is on my list too.
Beth
I liked Venice but i was surprised how small it was, we were there for 4 days, and I am so glad it wasn't 7, we had seen it all in two. The gondola ride was worth it!
Beth
Talk to me about Croatia, thinking of doing a week there in August, what can I do, which cities to visit? How warm will it be?
Beth
Rome is by far the best city to see if you only have one chance to get to Europe.
Karen
Ditto on the Amsterdam I live near there and it's not even in my top 10 cities, pretty boring, you can do so much better. Rome, Barcelona, Athens...
Beth
Agreed one of my best trips was to Malta.
Beth
Paris is overrated, been to many other countries that are way more fascinating, and French food is not very good.
Anonymous
Haha Neuschwanstein is the name of the castle. It's the "Disney castle" in southern Germany, or Bavaria.
Julo,
I agree, Paris could be replaced with Prague, Lisbon or Wien. I have never been to Paris, but only thing I heard about it is iron tower and the most expensive street in the world. But can never compare it with Venice or Rome or other cities.
Anonymous
I think you´re definitely not going to be able to visit all these places in such a short span of time. especially when you want to go from paris to greece, because for that you would have to take a plane, and then, only 3 days for greece definitely isn´t enough time.. also, I wouldn´t travel to one place in austria, then to the czech republic and then to austria again, because that takes too much time as well. I would just visit one thing in austria, otherwise it´s just too much.
so, summed up, if you leave out greece, it´ll probably be easier for you to manage to visit the other places in that span of time.
as for the best way to travel, I think going by train is a pretty good choice. taking a bus takes too much time, and taking a plane is sort of complicated, I think.
Anonymous
just wondering, how are you going to travel from paris to greece? by plane?
Denise
Hi Brandon. You're so lucky to have visited even just half of those places! And thank you for that little tip.
I hope to hear from you again!
Brandon
Love the list...only been to about half of them. Next time you're in Italy go down to Naples and take a boat to the islands of Ischia and Capri...Gorgeous. Little town just outside of Rome called Frascatti, Great place.

I agree Paris is overrated, my husband was always stepping in dog poo and the people were very rude.
sandra
Serbia !!!!!!! belgrade(the capital) really is special and so beautiful looking, ppl are so nice , and also a lot of hot Serb girls ;)
Lee
Hi, I'm planning a trip to Europe on the 15th of july and fly back on the 5th august. I have only booked return tickets from Australia to Paris but plan on travelling around Europe while i'm there. After reading everybody's suggestions i've come up with a little travel plan.My plans are as follows. PARIS 3 DAYS, GREECE 3 DAYS, NAPLES 2 DAYS, ROME 2 DAYS, FLORENCE 2 DAYS, AUSTRIA(hallstatt) 2 DAYS, PRAGUE 2 DAYS, VIENNA 2 DAYS, AMSTERDAM 2 DAYS, PARIS AND BACK TO AUSTRALIA. What do you think of this schedual? Also any other suggestions? also what is the best way to travel via eg. bus, plane, train and what airlines and services should i use? Thanks any help would be appreciated as it is our first time in Europe. Lee

I think Paris is the most beautiful city in Europe.
Sheila
Hi Gilad,
Those sound so exotic! I'd love to visit someday.
Thanks for reading and adding to the list =)
Gilad
Lisbon! I absolutely agree. And in Portugal, Azores are astonishing, specially Saint Miguel and Faial islands.
Denise
Hello there. I know that for someone who lives in Europe, some of these places may seem like old news. But I'm sure that for those who don't experience places like Madrid and Amsterdam on a regular basis, it will be a wonderful and an amazing experience. Often times, we get so used to life and living that we become jaded and blind to the beauty and mystery around us. Being a visitor in a new place gives us new perspective and new appreciation for the things around us.
Thank you, though, for sharing your input. It's great to hear what our readers have to say.
Denise
Hey there. You are absolutely right about that. Thanks for informing us about the mistake. I'll ask an editor to make the correction.
Again, thank you for taking time to comment.
Denise
You're definitely right about that Ms. Anonymous.
Thanks for dropping by!

Are you kidding me? Europe is a continent, not a country. -_-

*Neuschwanstein
Sorry, I don't speak German. :P

Also, I think Madrid shouldn't be in this list. It's just a big city that happens to be the capital of a country. Not much do see, no «wow!» landmarks, nothing. Just some museums and a big plaza. Lisbon, Prague, Bavaria (Castles like Neushwenstein) and the French Riviera should be in this list instead. Amsterdam is OK, but for people that don't live in Europe I would say not to waste time there, there are a lot of prettier cities with lots of historical sites and astonishing locations.
PS: I'm European. ;)

Hallstatt is located by a lake and not by a river.
Sheila
Hi Prem,
We're so excited to know that you've actually traveled to these places using our list!! And thank you for your suggestions! We'll add them to the list when we update it! :)
Prem
I arrived in Switzerland about 18 months back for work on a two-year assignment. I am an avid traveller and used this opportunity to do a fair share of tourism during my stay in this part of the world. I had been following this link like Bible to plan many of my vacations. I have now seen most of what is cited here. Each of these places are amazing and I must thank the author for it. In particular, I 'd never have known of gems like Hallstatt or Cinque Terre, if not for this page. Even though I agree with most of the choices listed here, I feel that Vienna, Prague, Budapest (may be) and a couple of places from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe should have made it to the list as well to make it more balanced.
