Hi Heather, my name is Dana(Nychicky) for the last four years I have experienced a terrible illness that mimics leaukemia called ITP. As a result I was at risk and could not go under the knife for any reason. I'm not talking about plastic surgery but dental work. I tried to take calcium during this period but to make a long story short the inability to have any dental work done, coupled with my depleted immune system, well I'm embarrassed to say have left my teeth a mess. Missing teeth, followed by uneven and broken ones especially in the front have left me with the inability to smile in the natural way I do for pictures. Prior I had small but a nice set of teeth. I am a 53 year old mother and grandmother but have been blessed by hereditary as far as my skin and I have bright green eyes and chestnut brown hair which I recently started coloring as the illness has left my prematurely grey. So sorry to make this so long but I wanted you to have an idea with what I am working with. My long term goal is to have dental implants with professional whitening processes. So if you haven't fallen asleep until I can afford this costly dental procedures how can I make my photos look natural even though I can't open my mouth causing my photos to look weird because I am smiling in an unnatural way. Help!! I've tried everything and until (3-4 years) I can afford these correctional surgery show do I make my pictures look like my face is drawn or chipmunky. I am so desperate I have even tried bargaining by working in a dental office or being a before/after model to pay but so far no luck. I want my children and grandchildren to look back at a heathy vibrant person instead of a old, miserable one. And yes a tiny part of me wants to look attractive and healthy after this long period of illness. Any help you can give me would be so appreciated. And by my screen name I am a New Yorker currently living in California. So don't sugarcoat or tiptoeing can take it. My gratitude would be everlasting and I can make a promise to pay it forward. The second edition of NYchickys teeth will be out before Christmas, lol. Thanks againπ’πππ·
This is very beautiful blog I read and I must suggest to all readers to use this product.I really like your blog . Some of your reviews are quite helpful, to be honest. For beautiful skin like this we need to do facial regularly. And each time we dont get time to go and get it done so here is it easy way to do it just visit http://www.beautyhome.co.uk/#services and book your appointment for manicure and pedicure .
hey girl, I'm very new on here. But I have a question. I'd like to find some really useful trick how to look half asian. I've found some eyeliner tips, but I think these are not covered enough. Can you help me please? :)
My grandmother once told me that the most important tip to looking good in pictures is smiling and having confidence in yourself. "You are beautiful no matter what, but a little bit of confidence can work more wonders than all of the makeup in the world."
@kschrock, to make your face more tan you could Need to be out in the sun with no face makeup on because that covers your face from the sun a little bit. use a bit of bronzer on your cheeks. It helps to create a summery glow with the illusion of a darker face, but apply bronzer with a fluffy powder brush and swish over your cheeks and cheek bone. Make it natural looking though :)
Also, don't use a moisturizer or foundation with SPF. The zinc in it will reflect light in photos and make your face look really light compared to your neck and body (I think we've all seen this)!
Heather
Absolutely! Here you go, take a look at these tips. :)

@Lisa Marie Hunt, Since when do photographers do makeup? Or models?
New models will sometimes do their own makeup. But, as you said "professional models", they dont "do" their own looks. They show up on set and get whatever look the makeup artist is instructed to do, by the client!
When a "smokey eye look" is used in photos, it is usually for a glamour type look or a fashion look. If that is what you are going for, then do it. But, it has to be done right or it will just look like you have a black eye.
Cosmetic
@jackie, Everyday Minerals, 100% Pure, The All Natural Face are some GREAT natural brands :)
Cosmetic
@Neon-Shades of Beauty, So true! Very important!
Cosmetic
@Heather Jensen, If you have Rosacea you should NOT be using MAC! All of those chemicals will just make it worse :/ Use something that is good and calming for your skin, like a good mineral foundation that has zinc in it (which is calming and healing), NOT Bare Minerals or any other that has Bizmuth Oxychloride in it. Everyday Minerals is an awesome brand that is inexpensive and you can order samples, for free, to find your perfect formula and shade!
Cosmetic
Even if you have rosacea, that you want to conceal, you should still wear blush!
You are covering the redness, making your face all the same color, which makes your face look flat and a bit washed out and sickly.
I know that it is a hard thing to accept when you have a natural redness on your cheeks, that you want to hide, but adding a bit of color to your cheeks will make the difference of looking healthy, rather than sick.
Thanks for the helpful tips! I used some when I had school pictures and they came out pretty good!:)
Heather
Aww! Thank you!

The illustrations on this post are adorable! Great tips too! :)

The only thing I would say is don't use whitening eye drops, the vessels come back worse because the area they were supplying gets more deprived of oxygen.
Heather
Mm, have you tried to match your skin to your face? Does your face tan at all?
kschrock
my skin is tan, but my face is always pale.... help!
Amy
I've had make up "professionals" try green concealer/corrector on me and it looks horrid on my skin tone. Unless you have rosacea you really have no idea what you're talking about. I suggest trying Bare Minerals powder makeup, it's light and non clogging (huge problem w/concealer covers) and so many different shades to get the tone right. It literally cured my rosacea. Just be gentle--no scrubbing or buffing--on those really fragile spots that tend to break out. I can use very fine scrubbing lotions on all but bridge of my nose and apple of cheeks now, huge improvement from my days of concealer and liquid makeup!

Just my completely random question but why do guys like long legs. I have long not bulky but strong legs from soccer and I get more comments about my legs than any other part of my body.
Don't line under the eyes (except white on the waterline) and do wear false lashes!
Mary
SMILE! Be relaxed and if you don't have time for a huge re-apply on the make up grab a pop of color for the lips! Always! Snap shots etc
Heather
Ha! That's too funny! :) Thanks for the comment!
heather
@Heather Jensen, my name is heather and my sons name is Jensen. hehe just wanted to comment :)

Awesome reply anonymous.

@becca lynn, Woah, calm down there! There is absolutely no need to be so snappy and rude! I don't think the girl made a comment that granted the huge drama you just made. She clearly stated that a "good photographer will know how to use flash", which is exactly what you went on to say. Stay classy.
Heather
Ah, that's a great tip! Thank you for the comment!! :)
Erica
Actually I am a photographer myself and do not use flash, yet glitter and sparkles in my subjects makeup still show up and give an unwanted effect.
Kayla
Wow Great Post! Love the Information. One thing I have learned over my years in modeling and working with photographers is NEVER match your make up to what you are wearing! Wearing the colors that match your eyes and skin tone really bring out the natural beauty. Ex: I have blue eyes and fair skin so I tend to wear light pinks/golds with different shades of brown or purples.
Heather
Hi Jackie! That's a great post idea! I'll add that to my list. :) Thank you!
jackie
I read all these great posts...but can't do most of the eye ideas because my eyes are so sensitive I need to use all natural, organic makeups only....any suggestions on ways to get these things in that type of makeup?
Heather
Hi Lisa! Those are the professional ones and while I love the smoky eye look, if you don't do it right, it won't show up great on film. :)
Lisa
What about all the photographers who give there models the smokey eye look? Is this really to be avoided? Seems alot of professional models are doing this look more and more now! I love eye shadow colors the best of all the makeup would be a shame to skip it!
Heather
There are tons of them! Though I was stick with anything MAC, they have really good coverage.

Skip the blush.. um no. Heres some education on using blush with rosacea. You use a green color corrector. Green cancels out red, concealer then foundation then you can use blush. I advise not to give makeup advice unless you know what to do.
Alyssa
Well you wouldnt have put anonymous if you knew what you were saying and knew the business like I have for 23 years.Using flash does not make you a bad photographer infact Ive seen some excellent photography with flash. As a MUA Ive gottan some beautiful photos with a flash,,
Cindy
Just mentioned the post on Twitter

Hey Calleigh! I actually use all different kinds, but a few of my favorites are CoverGirl and Maybelline!

What is a good eye shadow to use??
Heather
Very true!!
Neon-Shades
Don't forget to fill in eyebrows. They shape the eye area and tend to fade in pictures.

Smashbox
Heather
Hey Lisa! I think if you use just a little bit, a very thin layer, it'll work great!
LiSaMiSa
I've also read to stay away from makeup with SPF in it because it doesn't photograph well.. is this true?
Allison
As a professional makeup artist, I agree with a lot of these tips, except for the shimmer. If done the right way, some shimmer can add dewy-ness and accentuate the features of the face. A glitter could look very harsh, but a fine powdered shimmer, precisely applied can create a luminous glow in photos... flash or not.

what kind of brand is the best yellow tinted powder?

Professional photographers will often use strobe or flash for their photography, and find it very limiting when models apply their makeup inappropriately; It adds unnecessary work in post production and can restrict certain lighting options for the photographer. If you can't afford a professional makeup artist, these tips are a great start to getting better photos. -Angie, http://www.vintagereprise.com

That's exactly what I was thinking! They were misunderstanding the intent. The tips are all very helpful for nonprofessional pictures.

Great suggestions, thanks!

if you hire the photographer s/he better have equipment. and no these tips arent for what you say their for. every photographer knows these tips and their for portrait photography. for regular pictures with a normal point and shoot camera your regular make up is fine as long as your face isnt shiny.which you dont generally want any way.most of these tips are not only to make you look better in you pictures their also to make editing easier on the photographer. ever think about that?
becca
@angela sackett, as a photographer , and a good one at that , i know that if the photos are inside or at night, dang near every photographer will either use an external flash or a beauty box on the attached flash, ive taken many many many portraits in my time and ive screwed up many pictures because i didnt use a flash or because i over used the flash but you cant say that good photographers wont use flash because every fashon photographer, wedding photographer, and event photographer uses flash. youre basically calling any photographer thats ever made a mistake incompetent and thats not the case. ive also come to know that the subject of the photos often dosent know or understand that what they cake on their face is going to look terrible in the picture theres so many factors that make a good or bad picture and until i see your portfolio or youve worked with some of my clients i dont want to hear another word about the photographer.
