Eat Fiber, Breathe Easier!

Eat Fiber, Breathe Easier!

If you’re the type of breakfast eater who thrives on oatmeal for breakfast – you’re in luck. A recent study from the American Journal of Epidemiology revealed that those who eat at least 27 grams of fiber a day has a larger lung capacity.

You’re also less likely to develop breathing problems from pulmonary disease. This is because the fiber in those munchies that you have in the morning can reduce tissue inflammation which may damage your lungs.

Aside from oatmeal, how else can you add more fiber to your diet? Here’s how:

  • Snack on dried fruits right before a workout.
  • Try Aduki and fava beans for that bowl of chili.
  • Whip up your favorite pesto or marinara recipe using whole wheat pasta.
  • Substitute whole wheat bread for white in your sandwich.
  • Don’t peel that apple - the skin is oozing with dietary fibers!
  • Go nutty – snack on almonds, walnuts, Brazil nuts and peanuts.
  • Go veggie crazy – broccoli, green beans, kale, collard Swiss chard, turnip greens – they’re all fiber enriched.

Hmmm, makes me want a platter of veggie salad.
