Just Another Day in Paradise

Day 7 of Geography Awareness week, and the only continent remaining is North America.

It was hard to choose a place that I want to showcase in North America, because it’s too close to home.  There’s really no excuse for not visiting someplace that’s this accessible.

Instead, I thought I’d show you the view that I was looking at earlier this afternoon.

Today is the first game of the 2007 World Series.

The opening game between the Colorado Rockies and the Boston Red Sox will be held at Fenway Park, home of the Green Monster.

Today is Admission Day for Arkansas, our 25th state, admitted to the Union on June 15th, 1836

Arkansas is one of those states that I just don’t know much about. Yeah, I know that it’s in the south, and I know that President Clinton was from there. Oh yeah, and Little Rock is the capital. Other than that, Arkansas just hasn’t been on my radar scope much.

Details: Belmont Park on Long Island (Elmont, New York) is a 430-acre thoroughbred horse race track, best known for the Belmont Stake.

Today is the 139th running of the Belmont Stakes, the third jewel in the Triple Crown of horseracing. Belmont Park has two race meets — a 61-day spring/summer meet that runs May 2nd to July 22nd, and a 32-day fall championship meet that runs September 7th to October 21st.
