Careers and Women

Careers and Women

By Joy Adalia

I know that you are now a career woman. But other women hadn’t been as lucky before!

Decades ago, the role of a woman was to be her husband’s partner in taking care of the children and of keeping the house tidy and in order. Her job is to cook breakfast early, wake the kids and help them prepare for school, help her husband get ready for work, juggle the grocery shopping while keeping the baby clean, plus doing the extra chores at home such as cleaning and washing the dishes and clothes, doing some ironing, and generally, to be at home. In the late afternoon, she waits for her husband when he comes home from work. Her husband works for money to keep their budget well provided for. Yes, the career of a woman was to be the home manager.

The Big Balance

The Big Balance

By April Williams

Last night one if my ten year old twins told me that he noticed a new number when he was going through my cell phone. I stood there in shock and dread hit me like a cannonball in the gut. I realized that I am raising my children to think that it’s normal for a mother not to have an “opposite sex relationship” outside of being a good mother. His tone and demeanor suggested that I was in trouble for having a male name in my phone. Where is the boundary between mothering and answering to that inner woman? Why is it that some of us feel like we are bad mothers for wanting to date sometimes? I asked a few parents and the response I got was encouraging and fair. There has to be an understanding with children that they are always first and will continue to be, but mom or dad will have to have time for other adults.

A Whole Lot of Testosterone

A Whole Lot of Testosterone

By Angeli Kakade

What do you get when you combine the launch party for the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 game, Tiger Woods himself, Michael Phelps, X-box, a NYC night club equipped with an all night open bar, plasma TVs featuring the game, and miniature gourmet cheese pizzas? A whole lotta testosterone! Men as I’ve never seen them before. Whether they were short, tall, handsome, unattractive, single, or attached… it didn’t seem to matter. They all carried this heightened energy of maleness that made me question if they might have actually thought they were an incarnation of King Leonidas going off to save the land of Sparta. Ok, so that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I can’t help but wonder what it is about sports that make men feel more… manlier? Unless you are an athlete by profession, shouldn’t watching sports be for the enjoyment itself and not a reason to feel like a man? Forgive my ignorance here and enlighten me. An entire club full of men all much more interested in a trophy named after a shipping company than the few girls that mingled in the crowd…

Empty Nester

Empty Nester

By MaryAnn Feudale

Just recently I have joined the ranks of the “empty nesters”. My daughter moved out this past April, and that was because of the birth of her daughter. I found out that my daughter was pregnant last August, and though it is a time of joy, it became a source of a lot of harsh words, blame throwing, and tantrums, all on my end.

Sense and Superficiality: One Girl’s Quest for True Love on the Internet

Sense and Superficiality: One Girl’s Quest for True Love on the Internet

By Kaitlin Lipe

As a recent college graduate moving nine hundred miles back home to live with Mom and Dad, the male meat market has slowly dwindled down to the barista that serves me my latte and the 75 year old director of the library in my hometown.

To increase my numbers and turn myself into the Dating Goddess of Awesome, I thought I might try posting a profile on some of the more prestigious dating websites…Match.com, here I come! And so I made myself desirable and the powers that be decided I was worthy enough to be listed on their website.
