Summer Reading: Sweet Revenge

Summer Reading: Sweet Revenge

As much as I love reading a cookbook, I often enjoy reading novels about chefs, caterers, or culinary personas that have exciting adventures and delicious romances. Whenever I crave one of these culinary novels, I turn to Diane Mott Davidson, author of 14 foodie mysteries. In her latest novel, Sweet Revenge, her recurring heroine Goldy Schultz â€" a Nancy Drew meets Martha Stewart character â€" finds herself in the middle of yet another murder mystery. You'll ...

You Showed Us Your Cookbooks!

A few weeks ago I asked you to share your favorite cookbook with the rest of us. For PartySugar it's Williams-Sonoma's The Bar Guide by Ray Foley. For me it's Baking Illustrated by the editors of Cook's Illustrated Magazine. There were so many great entries (over 20!) and only one duplicate. These books look fascinating and I can't wait to try out some of them. Thanks to everyone who submitted their book!

Summer Reading: Cooking With Curtis

Summer Reading: Cooking With Curtis

Many of you have written in and asked my opinion of Curtis Stone, aka The Take Home Chef. Truth be told, I don't know too much about him, other than he started at Melbourne's Savoy Hotel at the age of 18, and then later moved on to The Grill Room with Marco Pierre White (Godon Ramsay's mentor/nemesis). I also know that he's the author of a beautiful book called Cooking with Curtis: Easy, Everyday and Adventurous Recipes ...

Summer Reading: Fanny At Chez Panisse

Summer Reading: Fanny At Chez Panisse

With the tremendous success of the foodie movie, Ratatouille, kids may be disappointed by a cookbook that dumbs down cooking with vegetable faces and cookie cutter shaped sandwiches.

However Alice Waters' children's cookbook is written from the point of view of her daughter Fanny. Fanny At Chez Panisse is the perfect tome for a child who has shown interest in the culinary world. The book begins with Fanny describing her mother's world inside the famed kitchen ...

Summer Reading: Vino Italiano

Summer Reading: Vino Italiano

A cross between a dictionary and a coffee table book, this reference guide, Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines Of Italy, is an excellent addition to any wine lover's collection. Written by Mario Batali's business partner, Joseph Bastianich & co author David Lynch, the book introduces each region of Italy detailing not only the wine, but significant wineries, recent successful vintages, and delicious native recipes. The authors write in a highly personal manner making this book as much about ...

Summer Reading: Sweets: A History of Candy

Summer Reading: Sweets: A History of Candy

This week's candy explosion made me realize it was high time I told you about a book I received a few years ago. My pal Jeff knew I had a thing for candy, and so he presented me with Tim Richardson's Sweets: A History of Candy.

In what can only be called an extraordinary view of candy through the ages, Richardson opens the doors to candy's sordid history. Along the way we look at various cultures, what they eat ...

Summer Reading: Something Delicious This Way Comes

Summer Reading: Something Delicious This Way Comes

A few years ago my friends Niki and Leon hosted a delicious dinner at their home. Instead of slaving over the kitchen themselves, they decided to hire a "touring chef."

As a former punk/hardcore rocker, chef Joshua Ploeg was familiar with the ways of the road. However instead of touring with his band he's now touring with his knives and has been taking his tasty treats on the road since 1998 â€" winning over audiences one dish at a ...

Summer Reading: Milk Eggs Vodka

Summer Reading: Milk Eggs Vodka

I don't know about you guys, but I love making lists - mostly so I can cross things off of them. One of my favorite lists to whip up is a grocery list. Milk. Eggs. Butter. Candy. More Candy.

When I'm done with the list, I usually just toss it out in the recycling. However one or two may have accidentally been left in the shopping cart. Luckily for author Bill Keaggy, I'm not the only one who ever left ...

Summer Reading: The Wine Club

Summer Reading: The Wine Club

Lately I've been encouraging my grandfather and his lady friend to start a wine club. I love wine clubs because they are a great way to get friends together while learning about wine. When I first got into wine I tried reading stuffy books full of information on wine varietals, grape types, and climate conditions. These reads were too textbooky, which is why I enjoyed Maureen Christian Petrosky's The Wine Club - a book that's packed with knowledge ...

Summer Reading: The New Basics

Summer Reading: The New Basics

When I was trying to determine which cookbook was my favorite - for our current summer reading challenge - The New Basics by Sheila Lukins & Julee Russo, came in at a close second. What I love about this cookbook is that it covers everything from appetizers and cocktails to sauces and desserts. This cookbook lives at my vacation house so I make dishes there while relaxing at the cabin - except for the few that ...

Summer Reading: The Omnivore’s Dilemma

Summer Reading: The Omnivore’s Dilemma

The Omnivore's Dilemma was one of last year's most talked about food books and yet it didn't have a single recipe in it. In fact, it didn't have any kitchen tips either. So what was it about and what made it so popular?

Author Michael Pollan uses his tome as a way to explore the way we deal with food, or actually, the way we don't deal with food. As he travels up and down the food chain, it ...

Summer Reading: French Women for All Seasons

Summer Reading: French Women for All Seasons

Remember back in 2005 when everyone was reading French Women Don't Get Fat, Mireille Guiliano's diet lifestyle book about eating the French way in order to lose weight and fully enjoy life to its fullest? Being a huge fan of all things European, and a promoter of everything in moderation, I enjoyed reading it tremendously. It's the only food book that Fab has ever laid a finger on, making me think it's fashionable enough to flip through ...

Show Us Your Cookbooks!

This month is all about summer reading here at YumSugar. We're talking about our favorite cookbooks, our favorite books about food, and books that just make us think of food. I don't know about you, but we have books in our collection that we just can't live without. For me it's Baking Illustrated by the editors of Cook's Illustrated Magazine. For PartySugar it's Williams-Sonoma's The Bar Guide by Ray Foley. We've both taken pictures with our ...

Summer Reading: Cupcakes!

Summer Reading: Cupcakes!

There are loads of books out there dedicated to the lovely cupcake. In fact, it seems like you can barely walk into the cookbook aisle without being bombarded by at least 10 cupcakes smiling back at you (and yes I said smiling, because we all know, cupcakes don't really scowl). And while there are some really fantastic cupcake books to choose from, today I thought I'd tell you about Cupcakes! by Elinor Klivans. Filled with gorgeous photography ...
