You need to go read this miraculous story by Diana Marcum in the Fresno Bee about Johnny Vera, who was recently voted Prom Queen at Fresno's Roosevelt High--by a landslide. Vera is dignified, larger-than-life and brave, like a transgender Jackie Robinson.
And Fresno doesn't sound like a half-bad town: at least they have a great high school, and a great newspaper. Photo of Vera and his best friend Mickey Gonzalez, by the Bee's Mark Crosse.

I am having a bad hair month. It has grown out, and I must confess, the bangs have been hacked at a bit, but I am holding out for an upcoming Portland trip so that I can see Rabeckah. Last week, I was in pigtails, but this week, I stumbled upon a flat iron on sale for $9.99, and it has worked wonders on my unkempt, fugly hair. Why, it almost looks like I meant for it ...

I really and truly do not know what to make of bath and body newcomer Nature Girl, or her sister site for fragrance, Rich Hippie. I feel that I should have an opinion, and probably a strong one at that. But I am stumped. There seems to be something oxymoronic about a $34 bottle of hippie soap that comes in the same kind of packaging as Dr. Bronner's. Still, I have whined and carped my share ...

Lechon + my mom's Xenical

Alli - the diet drug also sold under the brands Xenical and Orlistat - is going to be available over the counter come June. Will you try it? Have you ever used diet pills? I never have, but I have to admit, I am tempted to give Alli a try.
Now that every one’s dying for Summer (especially me, although it’s summer all year round here!), it’s time to make sure your skin is in tip top condition since it’ll be shown more than regularly (for most I would think!). I personally have always loved the beauty items in Cosmopolitan, but it was banned here [...]

New dress
Originally uploaded by dynamist.
I spent the weekend dress shopping, and boy did I get some beauties. I have never really been a big dress fan, not until the last year or so, after losing 100+ pounds and feeling a lot more confident about wearing them. This happily coincides with what seems to me to be a renaissance of unspeakably gorgeous dresses. The cuts and the ...
I know I’m not the best at updating, but once in a while (when I find something newsworthy) I’ll write it in this new category :)
Here’s what I found for today:
If you’re one of those dying to look like Keira Knightley (or Johnny Depp) in the new Pirates of the Carribean movie, you might want to [...]
I got a heartbreaking e-mail yesterday from M, and hopefully someone here can help!
When my daughter was 8 all of her eyelashes fell out. She has no upper or lower eyelashes. I took her to our eye doctor and to approximately two dozen professionals and she was even included in a study among eye care professionals. [...]

Breathtakingly simplistic, nasty accusations from India Knight (whose work I have admired in the past) on the suicide of our beloved Isabella Blow.
Unless one is intimate with the details of how Isabella conducted her financial affairs, it is guesswork at best to blame her relative lack of funds on an entire industry of people. Who precisely stole from her? She did hold down quite prestigious jobs, such as fashion director of the Sunday Times. If she ...

I love going into my local TJ Maxx (that's TK Maxx to you Brits). They always have a great selection of products - toiletries, skincare, haircare, and fragrance - marked down. So I'm sort of bummed to learn that the Banana Republic Fresh Nectar Harmonizing Body Mist I got there today (original price $18) is actually selling for 49 cents less through BR than it is through TJ. Buy it online here.
About this scent: I love it, ...

Tarte Lock & Roll Eyeshadow Duo in Patina

I hope you're not all freaked out about the volume of eye closeups on this blog lately. With that said...
I'm a big fan of Tarte Cosmetics, as they're one of the few companies that really give good product and good packaging. Both are important to me.
Creased, smudged eye makeup is the bane of my ...

Last summer I wrote of my secret love for PureOlogy. I hoarded the bottles I got at a PR event for months. Delicious, wonderful stuff but it was hard to justify $20 bottles of shampoo to my frugal life. Perhaps that will change now that PureOlogy has been sold to L'Oreal for an undisclosed amount. The company PureOlogy Research LLC, did $207 million in retail sales for the most recent 12 months. ...

I have never worn lipstick, partly because my eyes are too big and anycolor on my lips makes me look, I think, like Lucille Ball. But also, because when I have it on, I don't know what to do with my mouth.Imagine a four-year-old carrying a tray of china across a room towardthe expectant grown-ups, and that's how steady I feel with anythingmore on my lips than a swipe of gloss.
Then last week, I was digging around in ...
