I hope you're not all freaked out about the volume of eye closeups on this blog lately. With that said...

I'm a big fan of Tarte Cosmetics, as they're one of the few companies that really give good product and good packaging. Both are important to me.

Creased, smudged eye makeup is the bane of my ...

RIP Isabella Blow

RIP Isabella Blow

Eccentric to the end, she will be missed. I liked this quotation from Anna Wintour, for whom Issy served as PA:

She was not too good at getting to the office before 11am, but then she
would arrive dressed as a maharaja or an Edith Sitwell figure. I don't think she ever did my expenses but she made life much more interesting.

Michael Roberts, fashion editor of Vanity Fair, adds:

She was like an exotic bird. Issy was living ...

  Chanel Glossimer in Flirt
  Originally uploaded by dynamist.

With eyes this strong, I shy away from my usual dark pink/red lips, for fear of looking like a deluded Barbie wannabe.

Today, that meant Chanel Glossimer in a very subtle, natural shade called Flirt. (Full disclosure: This gloss was a freebie from Chanel, one of many I received last week.)

Although I said I'm over gloss, the Glossimer range ...

Inspired by Hillary's spring green shadows, I busted out my sunny weather blues yesterday for the first time this year. (I couldn't find my greens, spread out as my stash is across seventeen makeup bags on two continents.)

Actually, one of these is a very light, minty green - Helena Rubenstein Icy Eyes in a shade called Go Girly. ...

On useless corporate beauty websites

On useless corporate beauty websites

Marketing directors, new media directors, and others who are in charge of corporate beauty sites, take note:

We've banged this anti-Flash drum for quite a while now, and told you exactly why it is customer-hostile and translates into online retail that bleeds money at a phenomenal rate, but a picture really is worth a thousand words.

Siobhan Donaghy

Siobhan Donaghy

Yes, it's the ginger girl from the original lineup of the Sugababes.

She left that group when it got too cheesy for her (though, honestly, they're one of the most tolerable girl groups in decades) and has carved out a nice niche for herself as a...well, I don't even know what label to put on Siobhan. Her latest single, Don't Give It Up, is like Portishead meets Kylie.

Like the cover for her upcoming album, Ghosts (shown ...

PR doozies of the day

PR doozies of the day

I should read the generic emails sent to me by PRs more carefully. There are some real howlers in there. Just from today's batch of mail, there are these two gems, from two different PR companies:

[Product X] is a proprietary blend of ingredients from earth, air and water...

Wow, I'm only used to open source blends of ingredients from the moon! Please, though, can we cut the meaningless PR-speak? It might sound big and clever to your client, but ...

Terre d’Hermès wins big

Terre d’Hermès wins big

I'm pleased to see that my beloved Terre d'Hermès won the Best New Prestige Male Fragrance award last night in London. Nadine says it is:

surely the most wonderful men’s fragrance to be formulated for years.

It's great on women, too (and I'm not the only one who thinks so; the guys on the floor at Harvey Nichols told me that they get more women buying this for themselves than for men). It's a real comfort fragrance for ...

Jack & Hill in the Sunday Times Style Beauty Awards 2007

Jack & Hill in the Sunday Times Style Beauty Awards 2007

Don't get too excited: Beauty edior Bethan Cole just refers to Hillary's comment about Bobbi Brown's Maoist ethos, without crediting her, in this year's edition.

And now for the diatribe:

The awards themselves are determined by readers' votes. I find it somewhat depressing that with all of the innovation going on and the explosion of so many fabulous brands over the last several years, boring old Clinique ended up the brand Sunday Times readers voted for most. While ...

The “secrets” to French beauty

The “secrets” to French beauty

I usually like London's Sunday Times' beauty writing, but this piece on how French women manage to look so good is astonishingly stupid. It's full of tired, scientifically bankrupt tips that amount to nothing at all worth reading. Nice picture, though.

Speaking of pictures, here's one of my favorite photos of Claire, my fiancé's French mother (shown feeding Antoine as a newborn in 1965). Now she knows from chic.

Thinking of cutting my hair this short
  Originally uploaded by dynamist.

My last cut was this one, which I got in Paris last October. Since then, my hair has grown rather a lot, as you can see here (though even that doesn't really show you, since that style is the result of hot rollers). Anyway, it's grown out.

Thing is, that last cut was a really ...

Salt + pepper shakers + Kenzo Amour
  Originally uploaded by dynamist.

Those two orange things are vintage salt and pepper shakers, for which I paid a pretty penny at Mark Fisk's Mainly Art, the best store in the whole WORLD. The tall, curvaceous creature next to them is not a pricey sculpture, but a bottle of Kenzo Amour, which was gifted to me by Kenzo's PR people. ...
