Hillary Johnson's stories:

What kind of blonde should I be?

What kind of blonde should I be?

So, I've already pulled the trigger, and one of these is the actual color at the moment, but I 'm less than thrilled, and want to tweak it. Vote below for which of these looks you think the least un-flattering, and tell me why in the comments (or suggest an alternative).

Aside: I briefly toyed with the idea of a nice hunter green--I thought a composed, classic cut juxtaposed with a wild color would be super--but have been largely ...

These are bad hair days…

These are bad hair days…

I just had the two worst hair days of my life, back to back. After six months without so much as a trim, I finally gave up on thinking I'd get to Portland any time soon to see Rabecka, took a deep breath, and booked an appointment at Moxie Parlor in San Francisco. The cut looked okay for about half an hour, then things began to sproing here and pffft there, turning after a wash into ...

MAC Flashtronic

MAC Flashtronic

Here, again, I thought I'd juxtapose the gorgeous MAC photography with the "real life" application. I tend to prefer excess and drama when it comes to makeup, and subtle shades usually go right beneath my radar, but something about this soft look actually thrills me.

The Mineralize eyeshadow is made up of four colors that swirl together under the brush--so even though the color is far from bold, it has pearly depth and interest. This also ...

MAC Attack

MAC Attack

It seems the gorgeous creatures in the MAC PR department are reading your comments here, as they've just sent me all kinds of shiny, pretty things for review. I'll get to the subtle beauties later, but the first thing that caught my eye (literally as you can see) was the bright blue peacock-inspired summer eyeshadow from the C Shock line. I thought it would be fun to put the splendid MAC photography next to the "real life" ...

The straight and the curly

The straight and the curly

My hair is long enough now that it seems to want looking after. Imagine that.  I've been playing with hair products for different effects, and here are two publicist-supplied products I've tried recently.

Straighter: In the pic on the right, I used the very light and slippery Alterna Enzymetherapy Hemp Straightening Balm and blew my hair dry.  I have no skill with a hairdryer, so blowing dry for me means simply brushing the hair while pointing a stream ...

Foundation Iliad

Foundation Iliad

The sequel to my foundation odyssey, in which I venture at last to the MAC store...

I have long shunned the MAC store, not because I don't like their products--I do--but because a publicist was once really snooty with me when I was writing for the LA Times, and I took it personally. But that was, what, ten years ago? And MAC is supposed to be some kind of foundation Valhalla. So, get over it, I said to myself.  ...

Beauties: Julianne Nicholson

Beauties: Julianne Nicholson

Gamine with a gun?  I caught an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent the other night, and found myself having a hard time following the plot, so taken was I with new cast member Julianne Nicholson's look.  The haircut is perfect, and the sparing makeup is, too. Freckle-faced actresses usually wear a lot of pancake to achieve a more generic, porcelain look: Lara Flynn Boyle and Lucy Liu come to mind. Nicholson's shorn, willowy ...

Foundation odyssey

Foundation odyssey

I like powder foundation, even though my skin is dry, for the soft, blurring matte effect I associate with movie stars from the 40s and 50s.  It may clash with my 70s hair, but what the heck. I recently broke my much loved and abused Tarte Provacateur Compact, and was tempted to go buy another, but decided that as a responsible beauty blogger I should get out and try new things, if only for the edification of you, ...

95 and Sunny

I am not into nails. Never have been. Mine are short, round and unvarnished. I love pedicures, but usually just slap some paint on my own toes and leave them unattended for weeks on end. So I was mildly disappointed when I opened a UPS package from a beauty publicist and saw... nail files.  Ho hum.  But I had spent the weekend moving and my nails were indeed quite ragged, so I broke the new files out with ...

Beauties: Carolyn Tyler

Beauties: Carolyn Tyler

I met jewelery designer Carolyn Tyler briefly a few months ago in Santa Barbara, but it wasn't until I visited her website that I learned her story: She moved to Bali in the 1980s, where she works with craftspeople descended from the jewelers to Javanese royalty to produce one-of-a-kind ornaments.

Carolyn reminds me of a 19th century adventuress, and her jewelry designs seem like thinbgs gods and goddesses from other planets would wear....

Bronze age

Bronze age

I love this stunning androgenous image from MAC, which accompanied a press release for their summer products, arriving in June. Everything about this is unexpected, and at the same time, just beautiful.  I've never been big on bronzer, but I could come around.

Beauties: Johnny Vera

Beauties: Johnny Vera

You need to go read this miraculous story by Diana Marcum in the Fresno Bee about Johnny Vera, who was recently voted Prom Queen at Fresno's Roosevelt High--by a landslide. Vera is dignified, larger-than-life and brave, like a transgender Jackie Robinson.

And Fresno doesn't sound like a half-bad town:  at least they have a great high school, and a great newspaper. Photo of Vera and his best friend Mickey Gonzalez, by the Bee's Mark Crosse.

This week’s look

This week’s look

I am having a bad hair month. It has grown out, and I must confess, the bangs have been hacked at a bit, but I am holding out for an upcoming Portland trip so that I can see Rabeckah.  Last week, I was in pigtails, but this week, I stumbled upon a flat iron on sale for $9.99, and it has worked wonders on my unkempt, fugly hair. Why, it almost looks like I meant for it ...

Rich Hippie

Rich Hippie

I really and truly do not know what to make of bath and body newcomer Nature Girl, or her sister site for fragrance, Rich Hippie. I feel that I should have an opinion, and probably a strong one at that. But I am stumped. There seems to be something oxymoronic about a $34 bottle of hippie soap that comes in the same kind of packaging as Dr. Bronner's. Still, I have whined and carped my share ...
