Indulge yourself with Headonism organic haircare

Organic hairdressing has become big business, and if you want that salon look, without the salon pricetag, you should try these hair products by Headonism. They believe we should go back to our roots *groan* and stop using synthetic ingredients that strip the hair of it’s natural oils. That doesn’t mean they don’t want their customers to have hair that looks, and smells, great. They use organic essential oils…

Billboard ‘Baby Bags’ by WAS

Billboard ‘Baby Bags’ by WAS

It took me ages to accept I actually needed a special bag to keep all the random bits and pieces you carry once you’ve had a baby, and when I did give in, it took even longer to find one that wasn’t pink or frilly. If only I’d known about WAS bags. The Kiwi company save old billboards from a grim landfill death, and turn them into funky bags, including a range especially for bambinos…

International Dawn Chorus Day

International Dawn Chorus Day

If you happen to be up and about at 4.30am on 6th May (I am often, thanks to my young daughter!) then you can take part in International Dawn Chorus Day. It’s aim is to focus on the great things in nature and, for a while at least, to put out of your mind the problems our planet is facing. All over the world people will be getting up at the crack of dawn and stepping outside to listen to the wonderful dawn chorus. It’s going to be one of the biggest birdwatching events in history…

Robins wait for nightfall to sing their tunes

Robins wait for nightfall to sing their tunes

Poor little robin red breasts have been forced to sing their merry song at night due to the increasing noise of the city, a study by Sheffield University has discovered. The study found that robins nesting in the city were more likely to sing after dark, than their rural counterparts. It’s the latest in a growing number of studies that have revealed our feathered friends are being forced to adapt their behaviour to cope with modern life. I can sympathise with them, that’s why I moved to the country!

Major UK recording studio goes green with solar power

One of the UK’s leading recording studios The Premises, used by the likes of Bloc Party and Frans Ferdinand, have just opened a new studio which is entirely powered by photovoltaic (PV) panels. The company had to move from their old studios and the new building had a huge flat roof, which they felt was perfect for installing solar panels. They took an audit of the amount of electricity they used in a typical year in the old building and from that they calculated the number of panels needed.

Funky satchel by Kampuchika

Funky satchel by Kampuchika

‘The guvnah’ loves her bags, so I thought I’d give her a little treat by showing this funky satchel by Kampuchika. It’s made from strips of deep coloured raw silk with a silk strap, held on by rings carved from coconut shells. It has a little pocket, handy for your mobile phone, and a magnetic patch which keeps it closed. Kampuchika’s products are all handmade ethically in Cambodia…

Recycled glass jewellery by Janganant

Recycled glass jewellery by Janganant

More delightful recycled glass jewellery, this time from Caroline Janganant. She uses ordinary bottles and jars, which are carefully cut up, melted down and then hand crafted into exquisite jewellery. She specialises in large, dramatic pendants which she turns into fabulous and affordable necklaces by using relatively inexpensive sterling silver wire.

Dalby Forest eco friendly visitor centre opens

A new cutting edge, eco friendly, visitor centre has opened in the heart of the North York Moors. Dalby Forest visitor centre, a Forestry Commission property, has been constructed in natural materials and is the centrepiece of a £4.3m regeneration project. It’s main aim is to show how modern construction can be ‘green’ with the use of sustainable and local materials.

Titanic Spa – spring clean your body the green way

Titanic Spa – spring clean your body the green way

The name may not conjure up relaxing thoughts, but the treatments at the UK’s first ‘eco-spa’ certainly will. Located within an old mill, Titanic Spa claims to be carbon neutral with it’s own bore hole and solar panels. It even boasts a fabulous chlorine free, salt regulated, swimming pool.

Kodak Gallery: the first carbon neutral pro cycling team

Kodak Gallery: the first carbon neutral pro cycling team

This story was of particular interest to me as it contains two of my favourite things…beer and men with shaved legs! ‘Kodak Gallery pro cycling team presented by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company’ not only get the award for the longest name in pro cycling history, they are also the first pro team to go carbon neutral…
