Artist Tim Pace creates wonderful sculptures from industrial waste, like abandoned farm vehicles and broken play park equipment. The results are both amusing and breathtaking, with his collection including giant bugs and other animals. He tries to ensure that the original salvaged items are still recognisable in the finished pieces, like this shovel headed dog,

The benefits of breastfeeding your baby are now well documented, and attitudes towards breastfeeding mothers have certainly improved. National Breastfeeding Awareness Week is an annual event which helps promote this natural form of feeding among all sectors of the population. Health professionals are encouraged to run events and clinics where women can find out more about breastfeeding…
If you took part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this year, you might be interested to know the results are now in. Over 400,000 people took part back in January, and results show the mild weather had a big impact on the figures, with less birds appearing in our gardens than previous years because of the abundance of food elsewhere. The top 10 results are as follows:…
For those of us concerned about food miles, there’s good news this month as good old British asparagus is back on the menu. During May and June you can turn your back on South American incomers, and opt instead for home grown green goodness!
Packed full of nutrients, and not too mention the aphrodisiac qualities, it truly is a super food. If you are stuck thinking of new ways to cook it, check out the fabulous British Asparagus website. It has lots of recipe ideas, along with a map of local growers. Great stuff!
I’m sure I’m not the only parent who refuses to buy their child plastic, battery operated toys. Not only are they a disaster for the environment, in my opinion they also make children lazy, by entertaining them, rather than stimulating their imagination. These little wooden animals by Organic Hejhog are brilliant, as they are made from sustainable hardwood and they are decorated with non-toxic paints. You can choose from a variety of woodland animals such as badgers, hares, red fox and squirrel
Cynics among you may think this post is really just an excuse for an old punk to show a picture of the lovely Green Day lads, but as they have just signed up to release a version of John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’ as part of Amnesty International’s Instant Karma: Campaign to save Darfur I think it’s more than justified! The single will be included on an album of John Lennon covers, featuring other artists like REM, U2 and Snow Patrol. All proceeds will go directly to Amnesty International.
After 18 years I fell off the vegetarian bandwagon when I became pregnant. I decided to eat our fishy friends, but still refuse to eat anything else with a face! I will, however, still celebrate National Vegetarian Week which takes place from 21st to 27th May. The event is in it’s 15th year and is sponsored by genius veggie food manufacturers Cauldron Foods. There are many events taking place all over the country, including cookery demos, tasting sessions and talks on why becoming a veggie is not only great for your health but also for the planet. For instance, did you know that the methane…
Normally, when ice cream is labelled dairy, wheat and gluten free I’d avoid it like the plague, after all it’s called ice cream for a reason. However, The Booja Booja Company have managed to create the most wonderful organic ‘ice cream’ without any hint of an animal product or any unnatural ingredients. There are five fabulous flavours including Hunky Punky Chocolate and Coconut Hullabaloo. Stuff in a Tub is created in Norfolk and is certified by the Soil Association and Vegan Society.
I’m a cyclist, and I have a young daughter, but I’ve never been comfortable with the idea of her riding in a trailer behind the bike. I think they are too low, and vulnerable, and I’d hate not being able to see her, so we use a bike seat, but I would swap that in a second for one of these beauties by Kangaroo Bike. This is essentially a trike with front mounted ‘cabin’. The bike frame is made of aluminium, so it’s both light and strong. It has a 3-point steering system and independent suspension on the front, so the handling is great. It has hydraulic brakes…
It’s that time of year again when the fields are ablaze with brilliant yellow rapeseed flowers, and at our local farmer’s market on Saturday I got to try some cold pressed rapeseed oil first hand. Borderfields’ Oleifera Rapeseed Oil is produced in the Scottish Borders and only travels a maximum of 35 miles to get from the fields to the production press in Northumberland. Oleifera contains only 6% saturated fat, whereas most olive oils contain 14% and sunflower oils have about 10%, so not only is it great…
