Grow your own organic fruit

Grow your own organic fruit

We’ve mentioned the Organic Gardening catalogue before as it’s stuffed full of organic seeds, veg, plants and garden care items. If you’re lucky enough to have a large garden and fancy turning your hand to some organic fruit growing, check out the fruit section where you can pick up one year old apple trees from £16.75 each, pear and quince, plums and damsons as well as small soft fruit bushes like strawberry, blackcurrant, white currant, raspbery and gooseberry.

Whilst many of these trees and plants are now out of stock until late Autumn, now is the ideal time to start planning your winter garden planting for future harvests and read up on creating your own produce the organic way.

Arnie says let’s make green sexy!

Arnold Schwarznegger has been on his green kick again and good for him, I say. California already leads the way in US climate change and he’s even converted his fleet of gas guzzling Hummers to bio-fuel and hydrogen.

According to Arnie, the key to getting people to go green is not to make them feel guilty but to focus on the positives and make green sexier. Speaking at a conference in Washington, Arnie said, “Successful movements aren’t built on guilt, they are built on passion.”

He also calls for an image change to rid the green movement of images of tree huggers and hippies. Instead, he called for positive marketing to make green issues more mainstream, sexy and attractive.

Chicago’s eco shopping mall

Chicago’s eco shopping mall

Forget the hippy fairs and eco chic enclaves, why not just make an entire mall eco-friendly? Chicago will do just that with the Green Exchange, which has been pipped as the world’s first eco mall, when it opens in 2008. The 250,000 square foot building will hold approximately 100 vendors. Asides from retailers, there will also be an organic cafe and restaurant, sustainable furniture store, service providers and designers. They hope by providing a mass of green shops all in the same location, that vendors will benefit from each others trade as consumers find out what a wealth of green products are available rather than having to search out niche stores.

And I bet you wondered how green the actual building will be? The site is being developed in accordance with the Leadership in Energy and Enviromental Design standards under the auspices of the US Green Building Council. These standards give benchmarks for the design, construction and operation of green buildings.

Would you like to see a green mall in your town/city? Lets hope many more locations follow Chicago’s initiative.
