A girl can never have enough shoes or hand-bags, or so the old saying goes. How true it is I have no idea, it sounds like an old 1950’s marketing campaign to me. If you look hard enough you can find some really individual and pretty unique bags that are fair trade too.
Andrew Chrysostomou's stories:
There is a really interesting article in The Independent today about the effects of global warming on the Inuit community. A prominent leader of the Inuit community is due to speak at the public inquiry opening today into he proposed expansion of Stansted Airport. The groups fighting against the expansion are using global warming as their main argument against the expansion. Aqqaluk Lynge is an Inuit politician and head of the Inuit community in Greenland. He will speak out against the ‘cheap flights’ culture that is fuelling global warming. He will give details of the very real effects of global warming on his people.

There is growing concern amongst some members of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) about Japan’s request to allow them to hunt a limited number of whales around some of its coastal towns. They are agreeing to stop hunting the endangered Humpback whale in exchange for this. New Zealand and Australia are especially up in arms about it.

Many of us want to live healthier lives now, and hopefully many of us want to help save the planet from human activity. By eating organic food we are having the most healthy option for ourselves. Unfortunately this can be a problem for the planet, as much of our organic produce comes from abroad.
The environment secretary, David Miliband announced today that he is introducing a host of measures that he hopes will bring our recycling and waste management up to European standards. He is pledging that the UK will recycle 50% of its waste by 2020. The primary method he appears to be using to achieve this is to allow local councils to ‘fine’ households that do not recycle and ‘reward’ those that do. Of course there are other measures to go with this policy, such as allowing people to opt out of undirected junk mail, and a 25% reduction in the environmental impact of plastic bags in the next year and a half. Sounds good in theory, but how it will work in practise remains to be seen. The real cause of the problem seems to have been ignored.
The New Green Consumer Guide by Julia Hailes was published on 21st May 2007. Written by the author of the original Green Consumer Guide, which was released way back in 1988, this is much more than an updated version. This new book has sections on home and garden, food and drink, electrical goods and the office, plus travel, transport, fashion and cosmetics. Each section gives advice, and information about which companies and which products are truly ‘green’ and which are not. The book is well written and makes going green possible for anyone.
