The ‘Marrying Kind’? (Day 116)

The ‘Marrying Kind’? (Day 116)

Last week I mentioned one of the many men/infatuations from my past. Even though we weren't seeing each other seriously (yes this is the guy who compared me to Thousand Island dressing) he also took me back a bit when he said something along the lines of: 'I can see us married, the perfect couple. But I don't know if I'm ready for you right now.'

Umm...who said anything about marriage?

My relating this prompted the following anon comment:

"I'm ...

To begin, congratulations to Jessica on her Jeopardy appearance. I missed it, but I understand she did not emerge victorious. I'm sure that the winner cheated and the whole thing was as rigged as pro-wrestling and fake as Alex Trebek's hair.Apparently, NJ Governor John Corzine and myself (as well as Bunny) share the same tastes in diners.I have learned of this anti-male (or at least a

The parties

Monday, I was exhausted and didn't do much. I couldn't sleep late and went out for a short walk and coffee with Dad. I can't remember much more about what we did, but it certainly involved watching movies on tv.

That evening, we attended the first of several late dinner parties given in honor of the newlyweds. These parties are like work. The Hebrew name for them is "Shevas Bruchas" which, to my ear, translates as ...

My nephew’s wedding (Part III)

The end of the wedding story, finally.

The appetizers were placed precisely as the first guests arrived. I noticed immediately a difference between the Ashkenazi and the Yemeni women--the Ashkenazi women wear wigs (sheitals) to cover their hair. Almost all of the Yemeni women wore turbans (small ones) or head scarves.

Why head scarves? Orthodox Judaism requires that married women cover their hair. It is acceptable to cover one's hair either with a scarf, hat or wig.

Since I'm ...

Pumpkin Glutton

Last night as I got ready for bed, I called up Red Beard. After twenty minutes into the conversation, I was snuggled under the covers with his voice in my ear. We continued with our bedtime banter for another twenty minutes. I was delighted at how effortless our conversational cadence has become. We talked about work, our mutual friends and upcoming plans for our weekend together. He told me about his irrational fear of spiders and I shared with him my ...

Feel free to hate my book

"Do you ever get any negative mail from readers?" my sister asked recently.No. Never. Not once in the roughly 1,500 letters and e-mails I've received in the past 2-1/2 years since my first book was published did a reader fail to say that she (or he) "loved" what I had written. Sure, both of my books received very good reviews, and Finding Hope even won a couple of awards. But I'm not foolish

The Enviable Complexion of the Oompa Loompa

What is it about my skin that brings out the orange in every product?

Nearly every nude lipstick I've tried? Orange. All self-tanners, with the exception of St. Tropez? Orange. Any eye shadow or blush with the slightest hint of peach in it? Orange!

So I guess I shouldn't have been surprised when I tested the long-awaited Smashbox Bronzing Primer on my hand. Like the original, which I adore, it's a silicone-based mattifying and line ...

My nephew’s wedding (part II)

Poland meets Yemen

It's about 6:45pm on the day of the wedding. The "Barab" family were at the hall and the first guests were yet to arrive. Dad took Yehuda on a walk and was to return by 7:10pm. I hung around the hall, took a few pictures and checked out the scene.

At an Orthodox wedding, the men and women do not sit together , dine together or dance together. The hall was divided by 8-foot partitions. ...

Are Ju Sangle?

My hair has been bugging the crap out of me lately, I can't stand it when it gets a bit long. My last haircut blew so this time I decided to go to one of them there fancy places.

I was greeted by some dude dressed in all black. Roberto. A gay hairstylist. Well it didn't say that on his nametag but...c'mon...he was very gay? I was relieved since I've never had a bad haircut from ...

I may be seeing a friend in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in central New Jersey on Saturday night. Anybody care to join me?

Inspired by all the running blogs I've read recently, I decided to run a marathon today after work.

A marathon, by definition, is 26.2 miles. I did no training, but I am in terrific shape provided that shape is round. I was dressed in my usual crappy sneakers, a t-shirt, and sweatpants. I started off from the front ...

Cinnamon Balls: Recipe

Oh the trials and tribulations that come with spending holidays with the family! Will they never cease? The trials and tribulations that is. With so many relatives around it's easiest to just go with the flow. This year due to some changes in plans, it looks like Lee and I will be celebrating Passover three times. Oh joy! Lee loves the holiday so it's no big deal for him. And actually we will be spending the first night ...

...to see the Cuban National Baseball team playing in San Diego last night, in the finals of the World Baseball Classic. As we now know, Cuba has the second-best baseball team in the world, after losing to Japan. But still, just the act of seeing Cubans cheered on by Americans was healing to me. I have spent my entire life separated through political stupidity (on both sides, thank you) from my
