5 Ways to be Trashy in your Wedding Dress…

This photo shoot seems to have caused some controversy on the wedding blogs, some brides hate it and could never think of trashing their dress this way. Other brides love the artistic message the couple and photographer Michael Maler are trying to make.  Check out 5 ways to really get trashy in your wedding dress, love it or hate it.

5. Find an abandoned house…

01trashthedress

To get trashy in your dress you first need to find a great location like an abandoned house or lot. In this photo the couple looks angry and ready to fight. Is this a sign of things to come or is it art? If I were ever to do a trash the dress shoot I would want to look happy and excited with a sexy attitude! How will you get trashy in your dress?

4. Grab a Smoke and a Gun…

03trashthedress

Is that a gun in his hand? Getting dirty in a beat up truck in your wedding dress can be sexy, but a gun may be taking it to the extreme. Perhaps if he were a cowboy or had a military uniform on and was ready to protect his new wife the concept would be sexier. What do you suppose the message is in this photo?

3. Get your Drink On…

02trashthedress

She looks upset and lost while her new husband is in a drunken sleep. If you check out the video session it’s at this point where she has the gun in her hand and puts it to his head! I understand the twisted outlook on weddings and how the pressure of the industry and family members can get to you, but would you look back at these photos and smile?

2. Show some skin…

04trashthedress

Do they look like a real couple or do they look like models promoting the photographer’s talent? Here the bride looks frightened and afraid of her husband who is demanding her to take off her wedding dress. That may be part of the story behind the photo, but where is the passion and the love?

1. Burn Baby Burn…

05trashthedress

After all the drinking, smoking, trashing, and gunslinging it’s finally time to burn her dress! It’s a bold statement that says to me that they want to move on from the pressures of planning a wedding to having a rocking marriage. In the end they are walking away from the mess of it all holding hands, they are walking away together. Could you burn your wedding dress or would you donate or sell it?

This is what the couple wanted and they have definitely achieved it with a great photographer who made their vision come to life. It’s badass, grungy, trashy, hardcore, crazy, and extreme. It’s who they are. Could I do it, no not everyone could. What is your take on this “trash the dress” session?

Ouch! Can’t believe they burnt that dress. I do love that last picture though. I don’t think I could do it either. I’m a big hoarder of things that remind me of the past…movie tickets, college id card, bookmarks, old love letters, even my ex bf’s nail and hair…lol… I do love the shoot for it’s artsy photography value. And like you said, it’s who they are! Great find :)

    Hi SG,

I think it’s a new generation of brides we are seeing where anything goes. Burn your dress, paint your dress, get wet in your dress, etc. We all dream that we can pass down our gowns, but for the most part that doesn’t happen. It’s a very special moment when it does. Were you able to pass down your wedding gown?

    Wow Diana!
    As usual Great post.
It’s one of the best I’ve ever seen and read!
    I’m so into photography!
I totally love these wild ideas on pictures.
And this one with a wedding dress is totally amazing.
I would like an artistic photo shoot with different loactions, wearing my wedding dress. It would be nice having our photos around the house. Something to be amazed when you look at!
The second picture – Grab a Smoke and a Gun… is great. Even if it’s with a gun, I see it as a pretty powerful photo.
Something on the beach would be totally nice too. Or some pics in county sides! Some pics in grey and color scale.
Please find some more of these and do another post.
As usual I loved it!! :)

I trashed my dress, but not in the same way. My husband and I went with our photographer to Charleston, SC and had 2 photo shoots. One at Middleton Place Plantation and one at Sullivan’s Island on the beach. It was so much fun. Very different from our wedding day when I had so much to think about and there was so much going on. These pictures were awesome and we both had such a good time. It was great. After we had taken tons of photos we ran into the ocean holding hands for the final ones. These photos are my absolute favorite!!!

    Mims,
Great idea and wonderful thing to do!
Thoso photos will remain with you a life time. Not that the normal wedding pictures won’t, cause they’re the most precious, but forgetting that beautiful yet really stressful day, you get a chance to get liberal with your partner and express your self in them.
    It’s what I dream of too! :)

I really enjoyed this post. I love these photos – but mostly on an artistic level. I dream of trashing my dress but I’m not sure I could take some of these pictures – I’m not sure I’m THAT gutsy! But thanks for bringing them to my attention!
