12 Nutrition Tips for Increasing Brain Power …

Whether you want to ace that exam or just complete the Sunday crossword puzzle in the New York Times, it pays to know which foods can increase your memory and give your brain a boost. Here are some of my favorites!

1. Fish

Fish has been getting some bad press lately because some of it may contain elevated levels of mercury, but it’s still one of the best brain foods out there.

2. Spinach

All the leafy green vegetables will increase your brain power, and my very favorite is spinach! You can eat it raw in a salad, or add it cooked to dishes like quiche, pizza, and more!

3. Blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries

These sweet little berries are loaded with antioxidants, which will protect your brain cells from nasty free radicals. And they’re delicious!

4. Whole-grains

Whole grains are loaded with just the right carbs to give your brain a boost. Try a bowl of yummy whole-grain cereal, some delicious pasta, or even a sandwich on whole-grain bread. -

5. Apples

You already know an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but the skin of red apples also contains nutrients that are sure to boost your brain power. Crunchy and yummy!

6. Grapes

Red, black, and purple grapes also contain brain-boosting nutrients. Pick the ripest, juiciest grapes, wash them, then pop a baggie of them into the freezer for a couple of hours for a delicious summer treat!

    Hi Jennifer,
I believe Almond is a great memory and brain power booster. In India it is highly recommended. Curds is also something that moms give to their kids before exams so that their mind remains calm ( don’t know whether that has a scientific basis). I think you should do a round up of foods from different cultures. For example Broccoli is not readily available in India, and it is rather expensive plus it is never really fresh. Now fish is something that most vegetarians do not eat. So please add foods from all cultures.
    Thanks! for an informative article.

      Hi Laya,
That’s actually a great idea! I’m from India too. I’ve seen my friends’ mothers feed them yogurt before exams and I thought it was merely like a good luck charm or something. Either way thanks for stopping by! Keep visiting :)

I admit I don’t eat as much fish as I have too and instead I’m eating a lot of pork :) I like berries but they are very hard to find here and very expensive :)

Sheila: The yogurt-good luck comment is too funny. :D Segue: Man, I’d love to visit your country one of these days. :)

Nice selection of brain foods. They all are my favorite….maybe not so much fish…but I have it once in a while.
Consuming all of these “brains foods” should have landed me next to Einstein by now….but here I am sitting by my computer, trying to get smarter….

Hey, check out the brain foods I am cultivating in my garden…maybe there is still some hope for me….

    Sheila,
    Me too!
The only fish I eat is when we make Fish Fingers and Octupus!
Spinach is not that good but If you try it out with some good ingredients it will make a different taste.
For ex. try some penne pasta, add some spinach, some onions & bacon. Add them with fresh cream and some blue cheese. Than tell me what you’re eating :P I know its fattening but it’s my favourite dish. And at least you added some proteins to this yummi staff! :)

Wow you sound like a great cook! :D
Ooo I love fish fingers too. And fish and chips. But I guess that doesn’t count as healthy.

  10. Xannyyy, 11/25/09 at 5:24 am

    Sheila,
No that counts as a fattening dish!! But it’s tastefully goood :D
Yeah I love cooking in my spare time, especially when mum isn’t around :P Trying new dishes and mixing food that don’t normally go together is my fortee! You wouldn’t believe that some of them really taste superb!

I’m sure they do. I cook rarely but I’d like to believe that I’m pretty good! I suck at baking though.

      Xannyyy,
I have tried my hand at baking cakes. I’m good at the frosting bit but my cakes never turn out right! They’re never quite soft enough. The other day I tried baking a Betty Crocker cake and I put it in a dish too small and the cake kind of exploded. Well not “exploded” really but it was all over the place. Really, how can someone screw up Betty Crocker!

    Sheila,

I love reading them truly love you make me cheery even when I’m not :)
Well I would advise you to practice more often. But practice you make yourself perfect!
Give your self some other yried. If it’s not good this time, I’m sure it will be the next one. At the moment we’re collecting a lot of staff for Christmas dinner and I’m findig some nice deserts.. Yamiiiiii :D

Ugh! I hate sea food and apparently a lot of sea food is good for the brain. Poor me :p
