Kimmy,
I would include more cardio into my workouts if I were you. Also mix up your exercises. Never do the same stuff over and over because not only will you get bored, but your body will get too used to it for it to work anymore.

Frank,
Now this advice is only based on my gym days. I think as long as you're doing your cardio and abs and lifting weights for your other parts, you'll be fine. Also the great thing is, all the muscle you build will help burn more calories and that means a leaner tummy! If you go to a gym, I'd suggest asking a trainer or anyone with professional knowledge to help you out. Good luck :)

Morgan,
Love the way you concluded that. There are no secrets and there is no easy way out. Losing weight is hard work, harder for some of us than others. And you have to be willing to put in all that effort to see results. simple as that :)

Sheila,

You are right about spot reduction. For some reason, the author of this article keeps deleting my posts noting this very crutial fact.

No exercise program, diet plan, or magic potion will help you change only one particular part of your body. These 12 tips are generally good things to incorporate into a healthy lifestyle, but they will not shrink your stomach and leave everything else the same.

As for muscle not weighing more than fat, you're right! How could one pound of something possibly weigh more than one pound of something else?! Both equal one pound.

Sometimes people mistake this myth with the situation where someone exercises but does not see a change on the scale. Of course in this case, fat is used up and muscle mass gained, and both of these tissues have weight. And just to be clear, fat does not turn into muscle :)

There are no diet or exercise secrets.
Eat healthy.
Exercise 3-5 times per week.
Calories in minus calories out.
See your doctor or a qualified trainer if you are having difficulty maintaining a healthy body weight.

Ashley,
I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before but I'll say it again. The harsh truth is that there is no such thing as spot reduction. Which means that to lose some fat on your stomach and those love handles, you are going to have to bring about an overall change in your routine. And that would mean lots of cardio, healthy eating habits and other great tips that have been mentioned in the post. Good luck :)

Lexi,
I would suggest askng your doctor all these doubts. As far as I know muscle does NOT weigh more than fat. That's just a myth. But a lot of muscle can affect your BMI reading. If you are in the highest percentile, you are that much more heavier than the rest of the population. For example, if you are at the 90th percentile, 10% of the population is lighter than you. But I'm not sure about how this system really works. Your doctor would help best. And once you know how, please keep us posted as well! :)

Kristina,

Well besides the tips in the article itself, I would suggest reading through the comments. There are some great tips there as well. I've found that the best way for me is cardio undoubtedly and yes cutting back on soda and alcohol will definitely help!

to Jen:

Congratulations on losing so much weight!!! Good job!!! :)) I am sure you'll lose your belly fat without losing body mass anywhere else if you try a new ab routine. My husband bought this program called P90X - it's aimed at creating the perfect abs in 90 days if you do the exercises with the guys from the video. There are different sets of exercises which change every 3 weeks - so that your body doesn't get used to them and doesn't stop responding. I've done some of the exercises 2-3 times a week and my abs became so much more defined! Those exercises are so hard but they really work.

BTW, you can download it online for free via torrent's server.

Hi there,

Over the last year I have lost almost 55 pounds. I did this through diet, exercise and weight training. I am 5'6 and about 125 pounds. I have a BMI of 20 but lots of muscle so I think it is on the low end. I am small almost all over now but I still have some belly fat. I would like to lose that without losing any more weight cause some have started to tell me that I look too small and even that I should gain some weight. So, how can I lose the belly fat without shedding more pounds. Is it just a matter of doing ab exercises?

to Fiona:

It's really easy to put on weight once you stop moving as much as you used to. It also might be the result of the stress you experienced when you moved to the boarding school. What I suggest you do is substitute snacking, when you are bored with some physical activity. The minute you feel you have an urge to eat something out of boredom, just put your sneakers on and go for a jog. Or turn on your iPod and dance to your favorite music! Just make sure you do not eat those bad feelings and boredom up!

Oh, and also, once you start doing some exercises again, please do use skin lotion or oil every day so that you do not develop stetch marks once you start losing weight. It's very easy to get them and it's practically impossible to get rid of them later on.

Good luck to you sweetie, please keep us posted on how your weight loss's going.
