10 Ways To Prevent Getting Dark Under-Eye Circles …

7. Give up smoking …

Smoking is not only a major health risk but it causes ageing and blood vessels to appear bluer under the skin therefore contributing to dark circles. It also depletes the body of vitamin C so if you must smoke take a supplement to replace this loss.

If you don’t smoke, avoid secondary smoke as it can still cause a reaction in many people such as bloodshot eyes and swelling.

8. Avoid the sun …

The sun contains many harmful rays that can harm your skin, cause wrinkles and age spots. This will contribute to the appearance of dark circles under your eyes so it is best to wear sunglasses while you are exposed to the sun and use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or more.

9. De-stress yourself …

If you are feeling stressed on the inside it is more than likely to show on the outside. Reducing stress is essential in the prevention of dark under-eye circles.

Try to find a way to relax, it could be yoga or swimming. Try lying down listening to some soothing music with cold cucumber slices on your eyes for the ultimate effect.

10. Reduce your salt intake …

If your diet contains a lot of salt you may suffer from fluid retention which is a major cause of dark circles under the eyes. If you think this could be the problem try cutting out raw salt and check food labels for excess hidden salt, you will find it listed as ‘sodium’.  See 10 Tips on How to Read Food Labels … for more details.

Most of this advice is a general guide to leading a healthy life and looking after our bodies. Dark circles are commonly caused by our lifestyle or neglecting our diet, however there is also a chance it could be hereditary.

If you have been following a healthy life regime but have had little success in reducing the darkness, you could make an appointment with a doctor to check if this condition runs in your family.  If this is the case, you can still take measures to keep your dark circles minimal but unfortunately you might not see dramatic improvement.

    Dear Pregger,

I don’t know how this works, but tea bags do help my dark circles and puffiness. The trick is to leave them on for the whole 10-15 minutes and I usually put them on when the tea bags are slightly warm. It feels nice too! :)

Just make sure they are not too wet, as in this case your hair and your pillow case will get all stained…
