51. P.S. I Love You (2007)

This tale about love, life and death follows Holly Kennedy played by Hilary Swank – who was left alone, literally, by her Irish hubby Gerry, played by Gerard Butler.

52. The Wedding Singer (1998)

One of the best Adam Sandler movies that I’ve ever seen, “The Wedding Singer” follows the love story between Robbie Hart and Julia played by Drew Barrymore.

55. Ever After (1998)

Drew Barrymore hardly ever plays in period films – but she fits the role perfectly despite her bubbly personality.

56. City of Angels (1998)

I know, I’ve probably watched this film a dozen times already – but I still get this warm and fuzzy feeling when seeing Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage on screen together.

57. West Side Story (1961)

Most of us weren’t even born yet when this film was first shown on the big screen – so thank goodness for DVD’s and cable reruns.

58. If Only (2004)

“If Only”, a tale about a young singer songwriter who already built a life with her beau may have you confused – but the story works itself out in the end.

59. Across the Universe (2007)

The one song that I can’t forget about this movie is TV Carpio’s version of “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” where she’s portrayed as a lovesick cheerleader.

60. Mamma Mia! (2008)

Variety.com may call it a “predictably glossy” screen adaptation of an Abba-scored musical, but let’s face it.

ummm too bad that numbers one, two, and three should be West Side Story, The Notebook, and Tristan and Isolde (:
West Side Story is the best and most tragic love story of them all.

i agree, Notebook should at least be in the top 5, and in the top 10, they should also have Amelie and the Piano.

and what about all those kewl movies with John Cusack like High Fidelity and Must Love Dogs?

and if you’re going to have a Jack Nicholson movie, how about As Good as it Gets or Terms of Endearment? come on people, since when is Cruel Intentions Romantic, unless you consider soft-core porn romantic?

Some other wonderful romantic gems: Ever After, Somewhere In Time, The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby, Random Harvest, Dark Victory, Now Voyager, The Clock, The Wedding Singer, Beauty and the Beast(Disney version), Love Crazy, The Best Years of Our Lives, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, It’s a Wonderful Life, Butterflies are Free, What’s up Doc, Can’t Buy me Love, Sixteen Candles, Where the Heart Is, The Other Side of Heaven, Man in the Moon (Reese Witherspoon’s first movie circa 1991), The Magic of Ordinary Days, P.S. I Love You, and Marty. Why is it so many of these films don’t seem to garner the creedence they deserve, especially the last one? It won best picture of 1955 and is a simple love story that explores the complexities of human nature so eloquently. And two which are difficult to find or have not been released on DVD: The Enchanted Cottage and A Letter For Evie. They explore similar premises to Marty but abound with different twists and turns. The resounding theme in all these treasures: the power of love to transform.

I recommend any of the above selections if you’ve not seen them or if you’ve seen them a hundred times. NOTE: P.S. I Love You is a brand new title but I’ve included it herein because it’s sure to become a classic.
