Reese Witherspoon plays the small town girl who moves to the big city and gets a career. She's getting married but first she needs to divorce her teenage love from the hometown.

Romantic Plot: Melanie (Witherspoon) shook the dust off her Alabama upbringing and moved to New York City, where she became a successful fashion designer engaged to Andrew Hennings (Patrick Dempsey), a handsome man who happens to be the son of mayor Katherine (Candice Bergen). Melanie accepts his proposal but she has some unfinished business to take care of in Alabama: a divorce from the man she married right out of high school. However, in reconnecting with Jake (Josh Lucas), her family, and her old friends, she realizes something about coming home.
